The mainstream user would benefit from getting better performance out of existing or older hardware. Since all computers have GPU's in one form or another they can make use of them with this architecture for non-graphical purposes. This was possible with OpenCL however as the post quotes that was very difficult to code for. This on the other hand is based on C++ and should be much easier for developers. I see a lot of use for this in web browsers as they are probably the second most common demanding application besides games and Photoshop.

Wait, if I'm reading that right, the CPU and GPU directly sharing the same memory space would be an insane increase in performance.

Not quite.... a unified memory space would just make development much much easier. However, the architecture and libraries will have to be able to manage this space while not hurting performance much.... that's the tricky part.

So they actually produced a compiler? This should be a fun weekend coming up...I never thought they actually produce anything but promises. Now we will need to see if this actually works and, if does, is actually better/easier than the Intel compiler.

While AMD might not have the performance crown currently it looks like they are just laying the foundation for something truly amazing. Whether or not it becomes a reality is another story but I am hoping for them.

Duckie : Could it be that the way things are done and coded currently is restricting the AMD cpus? That this could bring out more performance in their cpus and apus if it actually works?

This is what I love about AMD, they may be the underdog but they are trying new things. They may not always succed but they are putting the effort in to innovate. While I don't understand it in full detail HSA sounds VERY promising.

Is this implementation going to be using "pools?"

If so, I guess I'm not fully understanding this HSA technology then. I thought it gave the GPU and the CPU the ability to access the same memory so that they could work together on the same data without having to move it around.

Yeah, memory management is one of the biggest and hardest issues to deal with non-homogenous processors.

If it works, it would support Intel as well in the end. Solving the issue of non-homogenous processing is hard.... you are attempting abstract out different underlying hardware and architectures to present a single paradigm to developers.
