Need advice on some cards and eyefinity vs surround

Thread Starter
I am looking at getting a 3-monitor setup for Christmas and am comparing AMD Eyefinity and NVIDIA Surround (HD 7970/GTX 680). Eyefinity is turning out to be a MASSIVE pain though, as you need an adapter to function. I am looking at running three ASUS PA238QR monitors @5760x1080. They do have Displayport connectors, but do I need an 'active' mini dp to dp cable, or is it just a miniaturized form factor with the same signal requirements? I am personally an NVIDIA fan, but from what I have read, Eyefinity is better than surround and I seriously doubt I could run Physx on three screens in DX11 on one card anyways... Opinions? Oh and also if I go dual-gpu later on, my mobo only supports CFX not SLI... probably about the only disappointment on this board but next time I will know to shell out the extra cash first rather than a ton more later... mad.gif

Here are two of the adapters I am looking at for Eyefinity:
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812191224CVF
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812270262

Will they work? I get the feeling they will, but would like a second opinion.

Currently I am looking at these cards:
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150596
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150586

Though would it maybe be a better idea to look at these since they some with a mini dp to dp adapter already?
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127670
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127677

Then pick up one of these or something similar:
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812816071
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812200602CVF

From what I have read, XFX is a great brand, but many people like MSI a lot too. I don't think I would go with the lightning, as the card MUST be under $500, preferably with all the cabling. The monitors come with DVI and VGA cables, but no HDMI or Displayport.

If I was to go NVIDIA, I would probably go with one of these cards:
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130797
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127672

Opinions? Ideas? Sorry if I come across as rushed/impatient etc. I am probably stressing way too much over this rolleyes.gif

Thanks,
Shadow Hunter

And I can't say with 100% certainty but you'll need active adapters.

But I could also go with the lower MSI and just overclock it right? Or is there actually a difference in the physical construction of the lightning? Also, even for mini dp -> dp I would need active? or just to other display types like DVI/HDMI?

Thanks,
Shadow Hunter

Incorrecto.

OP, you're panels already have DP ports. All you need are miniDP to DP cables and you are set, well and a DVI cable for the last panel. Then you should setup the DVI connected panel on the right side.

I would recommend you get your cables from Monoprice.

PS, no comment on custom cards. Personally I dislike custom cards and always go for reference due to my habitual watercooling. But if you are on air only, I would go with a higher asic binned card like the Toxic/Vapor etc. Lightnings are binned low for LN2 and you will be on air.

OK, so do I have to connect one display with dvi? Or if I wind up with a card with three+ mini/regular dp ports could I only use those and get some cables? Also, the reason I was going with aftermarket cooling was because the reference card is aparently very loud and doesn't cool that well. I am sure it is sufficient, but from what I hear overclocking is better with an aftermarket cooler. Also, what do you mean by binned?

Thanks,
Shadow Hunter

If you have a 3+ miniDP card, you would use all DP then since your panels have DP. That's the beauty of DP panels.

Regarding the binning. Lightnings are binned low. The binning deals with the leakage level, and it is measured by a % with an opposite metric. High value cards leak less then low value cards. Lightning are binned low so that they can use up a lot of voltage w/o dieing because that is what the ideal binning is for using LN2. On air you want a high value card, high as you can get. It will run cooler whilst using less voltage.

Is user error supposed to indicate the process is broken? I'm confused by your motive behind posting that?

I was under the impression that for 3 monitors and up, that one of the display ports needed to have an active adapter. Is the only the case when converting to analog or is that just an older card necessity? I remember having do do that on my 5000 series card.
