Intel price/performance way off? seems like it

why does intel lock hyperthreading support on some processors?

it seems like they simply charge twice as much for the same amount of processors in comparison with AMD. clearly they have the better chips but price per dollar they seem way off.

am i observing wrongly? how far off is a quad core intel with hyperthreading from a six core AMD at a slightly higher clock rate?

the only thing i can think of is that the intel chips would overclock more. maybe not though.

You pay for performance.. and 60$ = 80$ over the other brand is not much to pay for it..

People lose that in a case.. buying a 300$ case instead of a 180$ case or buying a SSD while it is not on sale...

Cores aren't important past 4 atm. IPC is king in gaming and Intel has IPC in spades. While Intel has fewer cores, each core performs 1.5x what an AMD core does. This means that a program limited to two cores will be faster on Intel (for example StarCraft 2). It also means that even with a core disadvantage Intel can keep up in multithreaded applications (at least with HT which are not real cores).

Market segmentation. Not everyone needs hyperthreading, so they create a product tier to provide it for people who are willing to pay more for it.

I guess that makes a little more sense. If I could pick your brains for another second i'm debating between core i3 around 120 with hyper threading, or a 6 core amd processor for 105-140.

I mostly play mists on Pandaria and have pretty much decided on an HD7850 for my video card if that helps.

Can find used i5 2500k around 140-150$

Can also find used i5 750 for around 100$ "one in the market place now"

Both will greatly out perform both those choices in a gaming rig.

if I were to get an i5 I would prefer something more Overclockable. Are the newer ones more ocable? I was going to just get an i3 but I guess I'll just wait til I have enough to get an i5.

So yea, what's the best i5 for ocability? and not too terribly expensive

Sorry all these newer models are confusing to me, I THOUGHT i5's used to have hyperthreading guess that's the performance difference between i5 and i7 now, probably trying to prevent people buying a lower clocked model and simplying ocing more. They want u to buy the higher models.

i5 2500k over on Anandtech 150$ shipped stock there i think 3.3ghz and OC to 4.8ghz normal.

3570k there 199$ Stock 3.4ghz OC to about 4.8ghz with a good cooler

The 3570k is 10% faster then the 2500k clock for clock.

Also where are you located?

Micro center has 3570k for 169$ + 40$ off a MB.. they also have 3770ks for 229$

Cheapest prices online for cpu + a MB that will OC.
