Someone gave me this - Any ideas?

ASUS Formula Maximus Special Edition
Q6600
2x2GB DDR2 800
2x8800GT (512)
Voodoo Case

Did I make out like a bandit or what. They gave it to me after I replaced it with a 3930K-X79-16GB DDR3-SSD $2k computer. They said it wouldn't start up and I found out the issue was the 24pin connector wasn't attached just now. The case is very nice but looks tough to mod. Are the mobo/cards any good for today's games? I'm going to see how far I can push the CPU tonight.

Ohhh... that makes sense now.

It will play Battle Company 2 at medium to high settings, and all EA Need for speed games.Might play Crysis 1 on Ultra settings. Other then that its a relic.

Hopefully you got paid on top of getting a free PC. If thats your payment, then you got robbed. You can sell it on Craigslist and get $100-$200 for it. I charge my friends $300 to build a PC, and regular clients i charge a lot more.

You can use it as a file server or a folding machine.

I don't do this as a business but yes I got cash on top of the PC; they just threw this in. I only charge my friends a pint of rum to build one.

Well it's pretty OC friendly. I'm already at 3.6Ghz with no real effort, checking temps and then seeing how close I can get to 4Ghz . I spent last night cleaning the dust and dried propylene glycol out and put some lights in. This will go in my living room as a Home Theatre PC

EDIT: Oh yeah I also had some questions about the two GPUs. They have a SLI cable, yet the chipset is Intel. I didn't think you could do SLI unless it had an Nvidia chipset. The guy that had this used three monitors for Microsoft Flight Simulator so he wasn't using the SLI was he?

Nice score; I do the same thing for my friends, plus it is a benefit for my fellow OCNers as mt friends are usually on a tight budget so I pick up used parts fro the OCN market square.

The rig in question with a 3.ghz OC will play most new titles considering most are still running DX9 (read port)

As for SLI, there is a work around, never used it thou:thumb:

lol you are a bad friend for charging them 300 to build a pc..i can throw a pc together in less then 30 mins and the rest is install time..unless they are custom systems with mods and full wc loops

I dont build POS computers, i just tell people to get a Dell. So yes, i build custom computers to customer specifications only.

Any monkey can throw a computer together in 30min, but most of them end up on forums for the next week trying to figure out why their **** doesnt boot. This is why i charge more, because i know how to resolve all issues very quickly, i do research before hand and i make sure no issues arise in the future. All of this cost money and takes time.

Ya but don't try and front like youre some "good friend" then. Its totally a customer-service relationship in your situation, not "helping out a friend". Helping out a friend is done for free. Hence friendship. Theres nothing wrong with charging people $ for your time and services at all, but call it what it is: a business transaction.

@OP that rig is pretty solid especially for free. I dunno what that guys talking about. "BC2 at medium settings". Are you serious? With sli 88GTs? This thing will max out any game that is from 2011 or earlier. And even newer games will be up there. I had a single 88GT maxed out everything up until Skyrim. And it almost maxed out skyrim too, aside from shadows and AA.

88GTs are MONSTERS. People really underestimate them. Theyre still viable options for budget graphics even today. As I said it will play all but the newest games pretty much maxed out, depending on your resolution.

Also i've never heard this thing about SLI not working on non nvidia chipsets. Unrelated question but does that mean my gigabyte board, with 2 pcie slots, will actually not be able to do SLI or CF because its based on an intel chipset?
