Fractal Design Define R4 Fan/Window Question

Thread Starter
I'm having some trouble deciding between the R4, but the side window version vs the one with a fan. Does that fan make a big difference with cooling/airflow, or would I be good going with the more sleek looking one where the inside is visible?

It sucks they didn't design it with a fan + window.

I've been just fine with the window option. You just need to make sure your front 140mms are pushing quite a bit of air. I can take some pictures of my setup if you want to get a better idea of air flow in my case.

Sure, that would be great as I don't know very much about airflow in mid tower cases.

2 140mms in the front at 100% fan speed

1 140mm at the top 1 140mm in the rear.

2 120mm pushing out the bottom to cool the GPU.

The 2 exhaust 140mm are set to about %40 speed to keep positive air pressure up.

With the side on

Shot of the top. Notice the other 140/120mm fan mesh is blocked by fractal's acoustic pad. You can throw another 140mm intake there and have it feed you CPU cooler.

My CPU temps folding on an i7 2600k @ 4.2 are at 62c and the GPU sits around 48c.

Let me know if you need anything else.

Looks like even though it's a small case, it has relatively good airflow. The only thing that turns me off on this case is the noise over airflow priority. How well is the front able to take in fresh air when the panel is closed? Another problem may be fitting the H100i, so it's between either the R4, C70, or HAF XM.

For the R4, if you offset the mounts on the top for the radiator a bit, you can fit the h100i in a push or pull config. It can also fit in the front of the case as well, but I'm not too sure if it will reach the CPU. I'm not too sure if the coolant hoses have changed it length, but if they're the same, it should reach over to the CPU just fine.

In my opinion, you should get the R4 with a windowed side panel if you want to show off the parts you bought. Plus, it's slightly cheaper than the other cases you listed. It's $99.99 at Microcenter if you have one near you (shipping costs a lot if you buy it online however). If you're buying it online, I would buy it at NCIX for $104.55.
