Seeking advice...please help Noob to overclock forum here. Need info on upgrading from 5870 2gb to 7970

Noobie to overclock forum and I must say its been very informative and has given me new motivation back to the PC world. I am looking to upgrade to 7970 but have plenty of questions. What is everyone saying about "reference board/pcb". Difference between reference vs non-reference. What, if any are the benefits to both. I have an outdated rig and seeking to put some life back to it before breaking the bank. I do plan on building a new rig by the end of 2013 early 2014. So I figure to upgrade the gpu now since I plan on getting another 7970 for crossfire on the new rig. I figure the price will go down once the 8000 series come out next year. Yes, i do plan on overclocking the gpu so an aftermarket cooler will be in the plans. This leads me to another question. If i decide to get an aftermarket cooler or block, I assume I will lead into problem possibly crossfiring due to the size of the card and cooler together. So any advice from the many pros out there would be greatly appreciated. Again, my mojo for my PC has been rejuvenated and have been rocking BF3, Need for Speed Most Wanted, Skyrim, and Far Cry 3 which is hands down Game of the Year by my choice. Here are the specs of my outdated rig. No laughs out there I know it doesn't stand to most of the PC's here but for the most part it gets the job done. I just want more right now from my GPU. OH, I forgot I do run eyefinity as long as the fps is good. Local MicroCenter is selling a Diamond 7970 "White Box" for 379.00 with 3 games. What does "white box" mean. Is this refurb, returned product, inferior????? Should I stick to Newegg and buy a name brand such as another Sapphire, XFX, MSI. Really want to know which 7970 will be best for overclocking and able to put cooler or water block without any hassle. Unlocked voltage would be ideal for me as well. So if this Diamond 7970 "white box" can answer my concerns.....then its sold. Unless, others have better suggestions. Willing to soak in any info out there. Lastly, any concerns about my current rig running 7970?????? Thanks in advance.

i never go with refrence cards cause they get warmer and dont overclock as high as the custom cards..if u get a 7970 buy a msi lighting..king of all cards and stays very cool and looks sexy as heck..the only plus to refrence cards are they exhause the hot air out of your case..but if you have good airflow it dont matter..white box is just a white box with no print..personally i wouldnt buy any of th e7970 microcenter has..

you have a very powerful rig. the i7 at 4 Ghz is more than enough to run even HD 7970 CF. so go for a HD 7970 or HD 7950 with a good cooler. at the same clocks HD 7950 is 5% slower than HD 7970. sapphire dual x and gigabyte windforce3x are good options.

HD 7950

Sapphire HD 7950 boost (850 / 925 mhz boost)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814202006

Gigabyte HD 7950 (900 Mhz)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125414

HD 7970

Sapphire HD 7970 OC (1 Ghz)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814202008

Gigabyte HD 7970 OC (1 Ghz)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125413

my pick is the sapphire HD 7950 boost. easily overclocks to 1.1 - 1.15 Ghz at stock voltage. unbeatable price perf. good user reviews.

something to watch out for with the msi lightning's are the DVI port doesnt support 120Hz if you have a (or want a) 120 Hz monitor in the future (aka it doesnt have a dual-link DVI)...i almost clicked BUY and then noticed it. i went with a sapphire 7970 ghz edition

dvi port def displays 120hz..im running it now

Raghu...i think i am leaning towards the Gigabyte 7950. Local Microcenter has it at 299.99 with rebate plus I have a gift card. My question is how is this card in eyefinity. I am really wanting to get BF3 and Far Cry 3 at around 50 to 60 fps. My current 2gb 5870 is giving BF3 at 24 fps and Far Cry 3 at 25 fps. Game is just not to my liking at those fps. My eyefinity setup is at 5760x1080. Also, I am assuming that the Gigabyte will get over 60 fps on a single monitor on both BF3 and Far Cry 3. Also, you mentioned good cooler. Is the Gigabyte cooler sufficient or am I looking to add something like Accelero cooler. And if you do recommend changing the cooler do I have to be concerned about this gigabyte being a reference or non-reference card.

yeah the Gigabyte HD 7950 (900 Mhz) is a very good card. does microcenter have the 3 games - farcry 3, hitman absolution, sleeping dogs. definitely get it with the games. the games are really good. if you don't want the games you can easily sell it for 60 - 75 bucks. HD 7950(1.1 Ghz) will be close to 2x your HD 5870 perf.

Ya i hear you....went to microcenter today to pick up gigabyte 7950 and sold out of the last 4 in stock. Felt like freakin black friday all over again. Sales associate states that he sold all 4 in a matter of minutes from opening this morning. only 7900 serious is stock was the MSI frozr 7950, MSI 7970 and Diamond 7970. Thought I was gonna be coming home with a new card but boo hoo me....At least I still have my 100 gift card and was not tempted at all in spending it.....To be honest the long ass line at the check out was the determining factor.. I was not about to stand in a 30 min line.... guess it was fate... I'll be back.. Gonna just hit the net or maybe Newegg and look for deals. I see that Newegg has the Sapphire 7970 for 379.00 plus 20.00 rebate. Sounds like a winner to me....
