win7 install on an old pc, could the mobo be dead?

Thread Starter
i refurbished my grandfathers pc as it was very old and slow. his HDD with the OS on it was riddled with trojans and other malware and it was only a 180gb hard drive so i went and baught him a new 500gb hdd but when i try and install win7 it either blue screens or tells me it cannot format the partition on hard drive 0.
i went to restore bios defaults but now i cant even use my keyboard and mouse. yet i can use it to press del to enter bios.. i mashed my keyboard then left clicked my mouse and it moved to a random section of the bios screen. Could his old mobo be dead? I dont mind replacing the mobo and cpu anyway as Christmas is coming up.

EDIT: the onboard sound died 2 weeks ago aswell.
