Have a few parts...looking for a HTPC.

Thread Starter
Ok so I have a few extra new parts laying around collecting dust and thought I would look in to a HTPC. I have maybe $400 to spend but I already have the following:

MSI 990FXA-GD80 Mobo
Phenom II x 4 965 Cpu
Corsair H100
8gb Samsung DDR3 Ram

Can you build me a decent list of what else will be good?

two 2tb hdds possibly 4 in Raid if you want.... for redundancy, and then maybe a 30-40$ video card .... 30$ power supply and you are gold ... (i am assuming you have a trash 20$ or super cheap case yes no?
You can pick up a 5XXX AMD or a 4XX NV for super cheap on the 30$ to 40$ witch will play any movies no problems and decode just fine for you! biggrin.gif

PSU

Case
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811237036

HDD Pick three or 4 of theses and you are good to go:

Video card, get one here or @ HF put up a wanted add and get one CHEAP CHEAP! biggrin.gif

with 4 HDD's for a Raid 1 and what not you are sitting @ 50$ left before rebates ... you could get a 5770 or a 6770 or a 550 or 450 EASY for like 40$ or less ... you are going to have a power house on your hands!!! smile.gif

I have a case suggestion
I just built a HTPC for my parents and I used this case:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811163205
It was easy to work with and looks great with their setup.
Edit: I just saw you have a regular size mobo. I dont think it would fit in this case. my bad!

Almost same case as mentioned above. $1 more and supports ATX

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811163193

Also the Corsair CX430v2 power supply should be enough for what you need in an HTPC. (Depending on video card chosen)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139026

For boot drive just get a smaller 40-80GB SSD (search OCN marketplace) and maybe a 2TB for local storage. No need for 4 drives RAID'd in an HTPC unless it is also your file server.

For your video card... What size TV and resolution? Are you going to want to do some light or moderate gaming on this machine at any time? What type of video playback are we talking? 720, 1080, Blu-ray, 3D?

You could go for an somewhat older GT430 or get a somewhat newer Radeon 6670. Haven't seen too many reviews yet on the GT630 for HTPC usage. No video card is PERFECT yet for HTPCs.

The issue I am running in to is finding a HTPC case that will accomadate the H100 I have spare. I will be running it on a 55" LG 1080p 120hz LCD until I can convince my gf that the Samsung LED at BestBuy looks better..lol. Also I may have a spare Samsung SSD 128gb. I am not really finding the need for two in my sig rig.

how does this look? I actually found a case that would accomadate the h100 without modding.

Looks like it will be a nice little HTPC. If I could just make one more suggestion to save you a little $ since that case is costing you $175 cause of the shipping charge. You can always find the Corsair CX430 v2 on sale for around $20 after MIR. Also if you do not need the blu-ray player right off the bat wait until it goes on sale. I wish I could say the same for the case... thumb.gif
