[Softpedia] Steam for Linux Will Get Eight Amazing New Games - Page 13

Personally I am very excited to see this new push for Linux. Watching Valve and EA both become interested in publishing games on an alternate platform. Having NVIDIA and AMD officially starting to roll out driver support for their GPUs, it looks to be a very interesting year for Linux. Microsoft moving to a more closed environment with its plans for Windows 8 and beyond just seems like a very bad move on their part. It has however opened the door for Linux and in all honesty the one thing that has always held it back was gaming. People talk about all the AAA companies only putting products on Windows really don’t seem to realize how the PC market seems to work. Argue about it all you want but PC gaming drives the market. Once you have the Games, you get the Support (GPU Manufactures) then the OEM manufactures will jump onboard seeing a new market and not too long after that AAA Software Publishers follow. Microsoft is shooting itself in the foot with the Metro Interface and the Windows Market. Maybe they will see the light soon and fix this but as it stands now they are screwing over everyone that has helped them get where they are today. Simple research will show AAA software companies and many other Microsoft partners getting upset over this new closed system they are forcing people into like Apple. Will we see Linux replacing Windows in the vast majority of homes any time soon? Probably not, it will take a few years to see if this push to support gaming will actually make a serious impact.

I have played around with Linux here and there but the main thing that has kept me from using it as a dedicated OS and not just a fun toy to play with is support for my games. Security along with Minimal Background Services and the Simplistic Easy to Use Interface with the option to go very in-depth make Linux a viable option if the gaming support dose bring the OEM and AAA companies.

Ohh behave, I'm no linux expert but if your going to be put off by a forum comment then maybe that learning curve is too steep for you

Never said I wasnt versed in Linux, however those that may be interested try joining a community and are stoned for it. Counter productive in my opinion.

Linux is where its at, I used it as my main operating system for a year before I got my rig. All that operating system needs is game support and people will be leaving for Linux. I love using Windows to but the thing that really irritates me with Windows is the slow updating process. A fresh install of Ubuntu takes about 15minutes to download/install every update for me. Linux with a SSD = Jesus.

Speed
Security
OpenGL
ext4
Open Source
Helping Community
Customization

I know I'll be making the switch when good games come to Linux, also I didn't see any awesome games in that list. But its a start. thumb.gif

I mean give some examples of things it doesn't have or have decent replacements for. I can think of some but the list isn't long. more over I can think of many linux has that windows doesn't.

According to Steam there's about 30 games that are Linux supported. http://store.steampowered.com/search/?os=mac&category1=998#category1=998&os=linux&advanced=0&sort_order=ASC&page=1

I thought Left 4 Dead was supported? I'll make the switch when CS:S and CS:GO get ported.

Your post looks like it needs some translating:
You're right. I'm sorry. I concede.

I also need support for AMD Dual Graphics before I can make the switch. I have the A10-5800K in hybrid crossfire with my 6670. I may go w/ a HD7770 @ some point but I hate the idea of my iGPU in my APU just sitting there >.>
