But how can that be big boss? He never lost his arm before MGS4 and he showed up in MGS4 with his arm attached...

Mantis died in Metal Gear Solid Tactical Espionage. He made a slight presence in Guns of the Patriots, but it was only his mind, nothing else. If this is indeed him, then it would be before Tactical Espionage as Mantis was a full grown person on the verge of dying anyways from his old age.

I'm no expert in the Metal Gear franchise, but is there a chance that MGS5 isn't a prequel, and Solid Snake has been in some kind of accident that put him in a coma? The man's got enemies who'd love to kill him, and it seems like the synergy of losing an eye and an arm is the kind of yin-yang symmetry the series loves to play on. While prequels telling the back story have been popular in the MG franchise, I can see a desire to spin time forward.

This is way, way before then. GZ and MGS5 are basically the same thing. GZ takes place after PW which is in the 70s.

Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker came after Metal Gear Solid 4 GOTP. While I did not play Peace Walker, there might have been something that went down in that game that would better help us piece this together.

It may have released after but the game was set in 1973. MGS4 was far ahead in the future which is when he still had his arm.

Well here is the chronological playing order which would make the most sense story wise.
  • Metal Gear Solid 3; Snake Eater (1964)
  • MGS Portable Ops
  • MGS Peace Walker
  • Metal Gear
  • Metal Gear 2 - Solid Snake
  • Metal Gear Solid (or MGS: Twin Snakes)
  • MGS 2: Sons of Liberty
  • Metal Gear Solid Rising (not released yet)
  • MGS 4: Guns of the Patriots (2014)

Kotaku is being overloaded at the moment, I suspect it's the video. LOL Stolen Ground Zeroes character prototype confirmed. Raiden is already an amputee cyborg, I doubt they would make the Boss lose more than an eye. (Solid confirmed)

It looks interesting, whatever the phantom menace pain is.

OMG

Muscle Mass degradation. The THIN Snakes!

XiCynx, I think they changed Metal Gear Solid: Revengeance's story to come 9 years after IV.
