The devices have different chipsets. The number you see is the "in the lab" results with very little application to a home setup. I have the first generation Netgear 200AV on a 100 Mbps connection in a older house (built in 1970's) where I can pull 80 Mbps from the router to the bedroom upstairs. I've been happy with that performance because of the near full network speed. You will lose some due to overhead but I've been happy with it and had it for about 4-5 years. I haven't had to touch it since I first installed it and pretty much had forgotten all about it.

If you're on a 100 Mbps LAN connection, there's no need for a 500 Mbps powerline. I'd go with a 200 AV. If you have a gigabit network, get the 500 AV and try it out. If it doesn't perform the way you hoped it would, then exchange it for a lesser speed. Test the results. If it's better than the 200 AV, then go back to the 500 AV.

I'd stick to name brands just because of the great warranty and support services they provide with it.
