Upgrading my brother's build, i5-750 vs i3-2120

Thread Starter
Hi I'm upgrading my brother's build since his processor is ****ting out now (I tested, with multiple motherboards). It's giving WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR every now and then. I looked it up and it points to the processor.
I overclocked this thing a lot and ran it 24/7 that way so I was kind of expecting it and he is overdue for an upgrade.

He's running an Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 (E0 stepping) at 4GHz, he has to overclock it so it doesn't bottleneck his GTX 470.

Now I'm on a tight budget and I was really looking at these two CPUs (with two different motherboards obviously), whichever one I get I'll be dead set on for the next two years or so (or until I can find a good deal to upgrade)

Either

LGA 1156 platform
Intel Core i5-750
-Quad Core Processor
-HyperThreading

H55 or P55-based motherboard

or

LGA 1155 platform
Intel Core i3 2120
-Dual core
-Sandy Bridge
-No HT
-No Turbo Boost
-Locked Multiplier

P67-based motherboard

Plus 4GB or 8GB DDR3 through NewEgg at $25 budget.

I wanted to go i5 750 at first but the price of the P55 motherboards on eBay are insane, going upwards of $80. Meanwhile I can get a decent LGA 1155 motherboard for around $50 easily (P8P67 LE).

The i5 750 is going for around $80 (bidding and Buy It Now) used and the motherboard at around $70-$80 for a decent one.

Meanwhile i3 2120 is going for around $70 used and the motherboard at $50 I can get easily.

Which one do you guys think is the best choice?

This is going to be running a GTX 470 by the way.

I would go for the i3, not so much as for perfomance but rather since it is using the LGA 1155 which is much easier to upgrade than the LGA 1156 which is pretty much impossible to find. By getting the LGA 1155 you will have a much easier time upgrading rather than having to buy a whole new mobo and processor.

What about i3's gaming performance is it comparable to the i5 750, I tried to google it but came to a dead end lol not a lot of people notice or compare the lower-end of the Sandy Bridge series.

The 1156 platform is dead but in terms of performance I'd choose it over the i3-2120.

The i5-750 is better. You can overclock the core i5-750 but not the 13-2120.
It's a little strange that your chip died from an overclock.

Well it's not really dead, it's just giving BSODs and errors, I tried everything else out on an E6750 build I had laying around and they all seem to work perfectly so I narrowed it down to the CPU.

I was thinking about going i5 750 but the motherboards cost soooo much, why is it in the PC industry, the pricing goes backward now, newer technology cheap, older technology relatively expensive compared to their actual value! =(

Depending on what mobo your brother has you should be able to find a q6600 or q9400 on ebay relatively cheap. Easy swap and both overclock very well.

Yup you could do this. What bsod error code were you getting with the E8400?

I had a Q6600, however it's much slower than the E8400 in terms of gaming and I believe would bottleneck the GTX 470 a lot! Even when overclocked (which it won't do so well)

I was thinking about the Q9400 but they're going in excess of $80-$100 for just the chip only. If it were like $40-$60 maybe but $80 that's a bit too much

i3 + $50 P67 mobo would only fetch me around $130-$150

Plus my brother plays GTA IV (modded) which according to some people doesn't play well with the Core 2 series!

The I5-750 setup is the faster of the two then. Im still using my 760 and have no plans for upgrading it anytime soon.
