A console by Valve? This could mean that Valve is seeing a larger potential in console gaming, rather than PC gaming (read PC gaming is declining), hence their investment in a console. After all, Valve is a business just like all other companies.

It's supposed to be an affordable starting point into PC gaming. The games are going to be the same games available in the Linux store. I don't think they're going anywhere near console only, as a matter of fact they're doing good for PC gamers.

It could be seen as that..Except PC gaming is still gaining in strength, it has the most exclusives coming out of any gaming platform and has millions of users. iirc Steam has 50 million accounts, naturally not all are active but usually there's 3-5 million on at any given time.

I'll be waiting for an emulator if that happens.

I choose no DRM? Choosing the lesser of two evils is still choosing evil.

Or, since it would just be an htpc running a custom linux kernel/skin/UI/whatever, the game would be "ported" to linux in less than a day, and likely to windows shortly after, seeing as source is an extremely easy engine to port games on. rolleyes.gif

Games on the Steam box will be Linux games as well. Earlier I posted about it helping them port to PC, essentially the Steam box will be a pc...but. But the difference is, I'm going to assume Steam box will be set hardware. Allowing developers to guarantee X games to run on that platform and at a reasonable performance. The twist to that is, since it is already Linux all they would have to worry about "porting" is hardware testing. Making sure it runs universally on different hardware, either way Linux gets the games. I could see HL3 become a linux exclusive, or at least released first. Especially if that will be a promoting tittle for this device. Honestly though, Valve could make any promotional game and Steam lovers will eat it up. I know a few who would switch over instantly if that became a valid option instead of consoles.
