for that music and fps games hd 598 is verygood pick, but way over your budget ...
DT770's 80s .for that money is great deal
i would buy new pads for it cuz i dont like used pads, u never know ...
they should be great for immersion and good for your music
if u dont play fps for money u dont need other HP
only prob with them that u need amp or sound card that have amp
and with that budget u cant have ....
only option is xonar dg (it should be decent)
with that combo, u should have Upgrade that will blow u away smile.gif

Thanks. Yes, HD 598 I've heard good things but is over budget. I like your phrase " if you don't play fps for money you don't need other HP". The guides I've read here are so hard on all of these headphones that newcomers like me seem to think like all of these are expensive but their flaws are as big as their price. And also, many options on the market do not make my research easy. I thought picking a memory card was hard, oh I was wrong.

So you are saying, I need an amp for those headphones, and the only capable option is the xonar DG? I don't have PCI slots in my mobo, I was initially looking at Titanium (but I hate that is old) and the xonar DX (and I hate that SPIF is shared with Mic :S ) My receiver has an amp, but I guess I prefer something dedicated. I'll look at the DG's equivalent for PCI-e and report back with questions

if you want something good which is inexpensive i have been using for most of this year JVC HA-RX700 headphones (which are some times referred to as poor man's A700s ..btw)
$39~ right now at amazon (price bounces around a bit...mine where like $33 i think)
http://www.amazon.com/JVC-HARX700-Precision-Sound-Headphones/dp/B0013OWPV4
or their big brother the HA-RX900
http://www.amazon.com/JVC-HARX900-High-Grade-Full-Size-Headphone/dp/B0013P3ZOE/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1355192107&sr=1-1&keywords=rx900
$57~
other than the comically large size of these headphones and long long cord (10.5ft or so i think) i have nothing bad to say about these(ha-rx700) I've worn them for hours without discomfort i enjoy gaming and music both w/ these headphones...
I also have a Xonar DG and have been satisfied with it's performance
you could do both the DG and RX700 both for what ?? $50~60 bucks (i see the DG is $23.99 at newegg ) then put the other $80 away for a rainy day rolleyes.gif
or ... get the DG and i just got these ATH-M50 headphones .. they are very very good... indeed .. more comfortable then the RX700 (but the RX700 is comfortable) the sound quality of the M50 is very good...
http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATHM50S-Professional-Monitor-Headphones/dp/B004ZG9TMA/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1355192540&sr=1-2&keywords=ath-m50
$116~ right now ...so you could stay under your $160 budget w/ the M50 + Xonar DG combo...

Thanks for your words, I thought the reviews were a bit harsh and overreacted. I was initially on the fence, then I looked at the DT770 pro 80, your words seem to be good enough for me to, along with what was said by LeClerc, jump on those DT770.

Regarding the DG, for some reason I missed looking at it. It seems, this card has an equivalent for PCI-e, the ASUS Xonar DGX. from looking at it, seems like a simple card, just like my old xtreme gamer, which is good. My question right now would be,

How do you think the ASUS Xonar DGX compare to the creative titanium (non hd) and asus xonar dx in terms of sound quality. I currently have a realtek 892 which is like a downgrade from my old Xtreme gamer. thats the only point of reference I can give in terms of audio. I'm using SPIDF at the moment with my PC and thats why I choose those two previous options

this is good read about sound cards/amp
http://www.overclock.net/t/1014902/ocns-most-recommended-audio-products
* If the sensitivity of your headphones is at or lower than 102dB/mW.
* If the impedance of the headphone is 64 ohm or higher.
then amp is good choice and sometimes is must
http://nwavguy.blogspot.com/2011/04/beyerdynamic-dt-770-pro-80-review.html
The rated impedance is 80 ohms and they have an “SPL” rating of 96 dB SPL. Those two numbers mean they’re a bit marginal for use with most portable players

dgx is dg with pci-e slot

both titanium and dx are "old" cards(but i dont see any prob with that) and should have better SQ than dg
how much it will be better, dunno
i can only look at stats i guess smile.gif

problem with your receiver is that he have dac and amp, so u kinda bypass sound card (depend of way u connect)
and u need to look whats output ohm of that headphone amp, it "needs" to be min 8x less then your HP ohm
(about this topic i didnt do much research, so im guessing smile.gif )
if that receiver is good and u dont need/want 3D sound in games u should be good
anyway , u can try first and see... , u can add sound card later

there is third option, recon3D
it have amp and 3d sound
it should be great for games and suck for music
most ppl on this forum hate that card smile.gif
________________________________________________________________

its not must to have amp, but with good amp u will get full potential of that HP
that "amp drama" forced me to look at HP that dont need one

i can list some(that dont need amp) that are worth too look:
Samson RH600 (for rock and fps games)
CAL! (more bass but still good for fps)
both off them should have lesser SQ then dt770 WITH AMP, but better for fps and cheaper cuz u dont need amp
guessing again smile.gif

i pick (for my needs) xonar dx and krk 6400
krk should have better SQ then dt770 BUT is very bass light
if u can w8 for like 10-15 days, i can post my feedback on them smile.gif

________________________________________________________________________

i pick what i pick cuz i live in croatia and i have limited option

if i was u smile.gif i would go for that used dt770 , try it on receiver( if it can drive) then ...
if u like it, buy new pads and maybe think about sound card if u want better gaming ...
if u dont like it, u can sell them and dont lose money

all what i wrote is based on other ppl feedback not my experience

Yeah, is indeed a good read. I was in page like 10 out of 18 before starting the thread biggrin.gif otherwise, I'd still be thinking razer 7.1 were better than any stereo headset.

Yes. People here hate the Real3D, to be honest, I'm not entirely convinced of its own specs. On paper, my old x-fi extreme gamer seem to be way better even after a few years older. I think right now the only way I'd buy a titanium is if I can get one real cheap, other wise is between dgx and dx.

I honestly don' think I can wait (sound card review) but I'd love to read your review anyway. This hole forum has been very informative and I've enjoyed learning from the posts over here.
