, pcie x16 is the longest slot and is used for gpu and pcie 1x is the smallest slot used for sound card etc, and pci slot is the one which is of less length than pcie x16 but much larger than pcie x1, and most of the old gen peripherals and even a few now use that slot for eg Network Interface Cards most low end ones still use pci and even a few low end sound cards use pci, but thing is the onboard audio and lan cards are pretty much satisfactory in performance compared to these low end devices so the need to have pci slots have been slowly diminishing !
