Looking for i5 processor and good motherboard

Thread Starter
Hi there,

Im not sure it's right section to post, im new to overclock so...

My current motherboard is ASRock G31M-VS2 (CPUSocket) which i don't know good or bad and my CPU is Intel Pentium E5400 @ 2.70GHz. I am currently looking for a new processor that fits my computer. Intel's i5 processors is one of my consideration. The problem is can the i5 processor fits my motherboard? Please tell me if there is another processor works same as intel's i5 processors and cheaper thumb.gif since im not that rich.

I did researches over the net and found that my current motherboard doesnt work with i5 processors (what i researched is 775 socket and 1115 socket which i have no idea what those were). Please suggest me some cheap motherboard can run i5 processors.

let me have faith with overclock.net!

p.s: im sorry if i posted in wrong section

hey! welcome to OCN

your current motherboard has a 775 socket. what that means is this: on the motherboard theres a socket for your CPU. your socket has 775 pins in it. so that motherboard will only be able to take cpus with 775 pins. its impossible to put an 1155 pin cpu on a 775 motherboard. its like fitting a square peg in a round hole. it wont fit.

now if your looking for a good cpu, id reccoemnd an i5 3570k. its a great cpu. i have the older version of it and i LOVE IT. its a quad core at 3.8 MHz so it will be a masive improvement for you tongue.gif. plus its great for overclocking if your ever want to oc it

as for the motherboard, you NEED to get one with an 1155 socket. id reccoment an ASUS P8Z77-V pro. its a little epensive, at around $190, but asus makes very good boards. im not sure what your budget is, so if its too epsnisve, let me know. ill try to find a less epensive one.

hope i helped tongue.gif

edit: oops, i saw u wanted a CHEAP motherboard, lol sorry. ill look into one.

It depends if you're going ivy or sandy. If you're going sandy, (Intel 2xxx cpu) then this Foxconn mobo is enough if you want to go dirt cheap:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813186214

For Ivy bridge (Intel 3xxx cpu) you will have to go at least with a b75 chipset:

Note that these are very bad overclockers

thank for quick reply and links, it helps a lot. i was surprised that the b75 chipset is cheaper than i thought, is the motherboard great and worth the money to play high quality games?

p.s: I have my video card settled, all it left is the CPU

EDIT: I planned to upgrade my RAM from 2 gb to 4gb. The seller said that 4gb is the maximum I can get. What should I change to extend the limit?

It doesn't make a difference if you have a high quality mobo or a cheap mobo in terms of performance. So yes it would be able to handle games. It's fine as long as you don't want to overclock.

well, as for a cheaper motherboard, i'd go for the ASrock z77 pro3. its about $135

if you wanna check out some more motherboards, look at these here

if ya have any more questions, just ask smile.gif
