I admire your team involvement ideals and your scientific approach of asking for hard numbers.

While I cannot provide you with these details, I did have a bit of thought to add. CPU development will hopefully not slow for some time and I hope that our teams can continue to integrate such newer and better technologies so OCN as a whole can continue an upward slope of folding power. It will be difficult to recruit more new members no doubt, but to eliminate a newer series of chips I think not the best of plans. That was my thought process at least.

Regardless, do let us know what your team thinks and vote when you're ready! thumb.gif

It's not double, but it should be a bit more.  We don't have any solid numbers, because nobody wants to fold their SB-E in native linux with it highly OC'd.  The i7-1 category would still be allowed to be SB / IB chips, and chances are they will still beat out the SB-E hex-core guys, because they will probably be folding in Windows, with an average OC.

The goal for me at least, was to attract some i7 folders that may want to fold, but own hex-core CPUs.  Looking at all the vacancies in i7, and then seeing Div III with active i7 SB-E folders it just seems a logically progression.  Well that, and the fact that they have been out for over a year now, without a place in TC.  Once they are allowed in, many of the current i7 guys may want to upgrade, and go dedicated linux on a SB-E, I don't know.

The main goal is to fill all the vacant i7 slots, increase overall TC ppd, while not losing any current folders to the changes. We don't want to discourage anyone from competing in the i7 slot due to being uncompetitive against SB-E. Based on the PM's I received on vacancies, this  would give the current lower ranked teams a chance to compete against the teams that are continuously at the top.

IMO, by restricting SB-E to SMP in Windows only it will still give SB/IB a fighting chance. Haswell and IB-E are on the horizon also.... Do we plan on making those ineligible because 99% of i7/i7-2 are SB/IB? When do we finally allow newer and better hardware??? Just my 2cents.gif

OK, so after checking with my team, the general consensus is to allow them, however, elchucko (our i7-1 folder) and I are having a discussion about this and I will have an answer by tonight (hopefully). As this would be effecting him more directly than the rest of us, I really want to hear what he has to say and weigh that against the rest of the team's opinions and my own before I cast a vote.

Also, I looked at albertsjj37's numbers and his daily PPD average looks to be 32,432 (when looking at the first 13 days of this month), so that doesn't seem out of line with the current i7-1 folders, but what bothers me is the amount of fluctuation in his numbers. It looks as if he is not currently folding 20+/7 now and my fear is that we give this a green light, he (and other SB-E folders) start doing a full 20+/7 folding and make our current SB/IB folders obsolete.

This would make for a major issue because there are far fewer SB-E folders than SB/IB folders and if the SB/IB guys start dropping out because they can’t compete, it will be impossible for us to find SB-E replacements. Let’s face it, there just aren’t a lot of people out there that will drop $500+ on a CPU.

My personal feeling is that this is just trying to be a lazy way to solve a short term issue. Sure, we could fill our i7-1 slots, but that could be done with a good recruiting effort. It just seems to me that if we start allowing SB-E and later IB-E chips into the TC, it will make it much harder to have teams that are competitive, as the teams with the SB-E guys would have a distinct advantage.

Now, I could be all wrong and albertsjj37 could be folding 20+/7 and just getting WUs that are all over the place and they could end up being right in line, but honestly, I would want to see more hard numbers before we make a decision that could have such an enormous impact on the TC.

Either way, you will hear something from me by tomorrow at the latest and I’ll have my vote cast by then.

That's not what I'm saying at all, but I feel that if the TC is going to move on from SB/IB (or any major change in any Cat), we need to make sure what we are moving to is popular enough to justify making the move.

Six SB-E folders (all but one of whom are not currently folding a steady 20+/7) is not enough to justify adding them to the TC. Also, we can't look at SB-E as "oh, it is just the new version of the SB/IB chips." These are server grade chips that cost nearly double (or more) what the SB/IB chips cost, so any belief that these will become as popular / prevalent as the SB/IB i7s is preposterous.

Personally, it just feels to me that instead of going out and trying to recruit new SB/IB i7 folders, we're trying to take the easy way out and just fill the slots with SB-E guys when doing so could have a huge impact on the TC. Or it may have no impact, but we don't know either way, we don't have enough data to make that conclusion.

Really, my big issue is with making this change and not knowing what the impact could be because we don’t have proper numbers on it. From the looks of it, we can only get numbers from one folder, albertsjj37, as the others are too inconsistent to pull any real data from. So based off the numbers of one folder, we are going to make a major change to the TC? I just think we need more data on it before we go to allowing this.

I'm all for moving the TC forward, but I’m against doing so without proper justification. In the past, even when IB hit, we collected data, saw how it compared to SB, then made had the vote. And that was just moving in a logical progression, SB to SB/IB. This is potentially much bigger because the SB-E chips are not just a logical progression of a chip series, but are on a different plane, vastly different price point, and quite possibly on a whole different PPD scale.

I want to see the TC move forward, but not in such a way that it could hurt the TC’s spirit. We’re here to have what should be a fair competition, may the best team with the best OCs on the same/similar hardware win. SB-E is not similar hardware to SB/IB. That’s all I’m saying.

SB-E is still an i7 and not server grade..... The next mainsteam chip will be Haswell and still cost $500+ for a new setup. There are more than just the Div. 3 SB-E folders that have expressed interest in TC. There are couple folders in Div.1&2 willing to upgrade but are held back by eligibility requirements. You are 1 of 4 Captains that's actively out recruiting while the other 17 wait until Editors do it. Sorry, for the short, direct response but I'm at work tongue.gif
