Reapplying thermal paste on a gigabyte gtx 670 oc windforce x3

Looking at how other aftermarket heatsinks get installed, I'm pretty sure all you need to do is apply a small dab of thermal paste. Worst case scenario is you get worse temps and all you gotta do is take it apart again and wipe off the thermal paste. thumb.gif

Well, but those aftermarket heatsinks don't employ the heatpipe direct touch, right? So I understand how they use thr dot method there.

I actually got worse temps using the spread method. When I took the heatsink off again, I saw that there wasn't enough paste that touched the base of the heatsink. So I redid the spread by applying a thicker layer this time but the temps are still worse compared to the stock TIM application before.

I don't think it matters if it's direct touch or not. You just want to get the best contact possible so you get the most heat transfer. TIM just helps to seal up those imperfections in the surface. If the base isn't touching, then you gotta make sure you mounted it right. You might even have to lap it to make it touch.

If both surfaces were perfectly smooth in the nanoscale levels, then you wouldn't even need TIM.

I actually understand the concept of TIM. It does matter if it's direct heatpipe touch or not, at least for CPUs and several different aftermarket heatsinks. You can try a quick google search on that. Lapping would make the surface more even, yes, but I don't consider an option for stock GPU heatsinks.

So yeah, only the application method of the TIM for THIS specific GPU is what I'm wondering about smile.gif

Apply the paste like you would on any other direct touch cooler, two lines parallel to the heat pipes like this - http://benchmarkreviews.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=150&Itemid=62&limit=1&limitstart=5

EDIT: Be sure to smear a bit paste across the heatsink to fill in the gaps between the pipes and the block.

When you say smear a bit of paste across the heatsink, do you mean I should fill the gaps with paste like what the article explains?

By the way, here's the heatsink of my GPU:

You can see here that it is somewhat different from the CPU heatsink in the above article. My GPU's heatsink doesn't have any "metal" in between the heatpipes although it has the little gaps in between. With this, where do I apply the two lines of paste then?
