I just want to know how much difference 120 pixels would be

.. Google the pictures? I know it sounds obvious, but it'd be your best bet.

It depends on the game and how it scales with resolution. Some will scale up to the larger 1200 while others will scale down to the aspect ratio.

So what you're really asking is what is 16:10 gameplay like compared to 16:9? I like 16:10 better, not as wide FOV usually so it looks slightly more zoomed in. 16:9 looks too squished down with Hor+ games, but I guess thats because I started gaming back on 4:3 aspect ratio CRT monitors and am used to the squareness. I find a lot of kids these days like the "full HD" rolleyes.gif screens better because thats what they are used to though.

Mostly this will depend on the game you want to play and how it handles FOV scaling.

Well I also have my monitors in portrait mode.

I find the difference to be very similar to 1680x1050 vs 1920x1080, if you've ever used both. I have a 21 (20.1" viewable) Viewsonic 1680x1050 as well as a 22" (21.5" viewable) Dell 1920x1080.

SPECS:

Dell
  • 21.5" 6bit-Panel TN Display (18.7x10.6 inches) and 16.7mil Colors Advertised (Calibration shows ~97.4% sRGB)
  • 5ms Response Time (Input Lag is one of the lowest I've ever used, with an identical feel to the U2312 that is known for extremely low input lag)
  • 1920x1080 resolution @ 60hz
  • Dual DVI-D, VGA, DisplayPort, and HDMI Video-In
  • 1x USB2.0 IN, 3x USB2.0 OUT
  • 1x Audio IN (Stereo In), 2x Stereo OUT (supports Dell Soundbar, which I have), 1x Headphone OUT, 1x Mic IN
  • VESA Mount and full-adjustable stand (height, swivel, tilt, and rotate-to-portrait)
  • PIXEL PITCH = 0.243mm
  • DPI = ~105ppi

Viewsonic
  • 20.1" 6bit-Panel TN Display (17.1x10.7 inches) and 16.7mil Colors Advertised (Calibration shows ~91% sRGB)
  • 5ms Response Time (input lag is barely more than the Dell, due to no complex PCB's or anything)
  • 1680x1050 resolution @ 60hz (up to 75hz)
  • Dual DVI-D/I and VGA Video-In
  • 1x Audio IN, 1x Audio OUT
  • VESA Mount and 25deg-Back/18deg-Forward Tilt
  • PIXEL PITCH = 0.256
  • DPI = ~99ppi

I have a number of other displays, but these are what I use more than anything else; although I will sometimes use a pair of (old; don't even know the model numbers; circa 2004) Dell 1400x1050 LCD 4:3 displays on either side of the Viewsonic, giving a total resolution of 4480x1050.
Now, 3x 1080p screens gives you 5760x1080, which is an aspect ratio of 16:3 (5.333:1), and pretty wide.
Using the single 1680x1050 in the middle with 2 flanking 1400x1050 panels, the aspect ratio is 21.3:5 (4.2666:1), which is pretty wide but also taller.

Even comparing 3x 1080p vs 3x 1680x1050 in landscape, you get...
16:3 (5.333:1) for the 1080p
24:5 (4.8:1) for the 1050p

Even though the exact pixels are different, the aspect ratios are the same. I wish I had Photoshop on this laptop so I could give you a rough estimate drawing of the two compared.

That said...

When it comes to actually "being productive", I prefer the 1680x1050 with the two extra 1400x1050 flanking panels, as it allows me to have 4 full-size documents open at once, which is quite beneficial when you're in Psychopharmacology lol.

For games and video and everything else, I prefer the single 1080p display, as it has such an incredible pixel pitch and DPI that, honestly, 0xAA on the 21.5" 1080p looks the same as 4xAA on the 1050p, and 6xAA on the 1080p looks better than 16xAA on the 1680. That lets me go crazy with every other setting, and still put less load on my card's VRAM while ending up with a much better looking picture.

I have been looking to buy a new monitor myself, actually....
The monitors I have been looking at with heavily are, in no particular order, the following:
- Dell S2340L (23" IPS Glossy-Screen 1080p)
- Dell U2312H (23" IPS Matte Screen 1080p *Minimal Input Lag)
- Dell U2412H (24" IPS Matte Screen 1200p)
- Auria EQ278W (27" S-IPS Glossy Screen 1440p)

Having used them all in store or at friends' houses, although the new S-series I have only had about 10min with, I am absolutely torn! I prefer glossy to matte, but I like the idea of either 1440p or 1200p, and with super-cheap prices on all of them, it's a VERY DIFFICULT CHOICE!
