GTX 480 SLI and Geforce 210 for 3 monitors

Thread Starter
I will start my story from the beginning, and if you don't feel like reading it you can read the tl;dr at the bottom.

So I had a XFX 687X 2GB to power 3 monitors and some decent gaming. I recently came across 2 480's from my father who no longer needed them for ProD/ProE/Inventory etc.

Now I ran those 2 480's in SLI and gathered amazing FPS over my original set up, but was limited to 2 monitors. I decided it would be in my best interest to purchase a cheap nvidia card to run in my 3rd PCI-E slot to dedicate to 1 monitor. I came across a MSI GeForce 210 for 19.99 on eBay and quickly threw that into my rig.

Now, my SLI no longer functions. I am using the 210 to power 2 of my monitors (left and right) and use my 480's to power my center.

Ever since I installed the 210, I can no longer get SLi to function. Now when I installed it, I set up SLI; AND THEN "turned on" my left monitor. I've upgraded from 310.33 - 310.54 - 310.61 and am currently running 310.70.

On this night, I power up my rig and nvidia control panel informs me my system is capable of SLI (no ****) and that I should turn it on. Load up the "Configure SLI, Surround, PhysX" and maximize is selected. I turned it off (since it didn't work anyway) and it has just changed to the window to pick which GPU to dedicate to PhysX and it does not recognize SLI as an option.

tl;dr 2 480's and a 210. I am unable to get SLI to work since I installed the 210. 2 monitors are powered from the 210 just for normal display, and the 480's are obviously used for center/gaming.

\\SOLVED: So apparently the optimal set up for SLI was in PCIe slot 1 and PCIe slot 3 on my motherboard (Crosshair V Formula (not the Z or thunderbolt model))

you had the right idea but the monitors were all in the wrong sockets. what will happen is sli will enable itself and youll be running a triple wide resolution. if you do want to game on just one screen, just set your resolution through the in game settings. SLI will still be enabled

I was able to install my GeForce 210 into PCIe slot 2 and now I have my 480s dedicated to my center screen and my 210 for my two aux monitors.

Yay!

Why were you limited to two monitors with SLI 480s?
I'm almost certain you should have been able to run three monitors from the two cards. (see article here, they say they used two 480s in SLI for three monitors)

I could have sworn you can only have as many displays as each card can support natively, when running in SLI. The way it was explained to me was you can only have as many displays as 1 card supports, no matter how many you have running in side-by-side.

I will first make sure my bridge isn't damaged, or another conflict is there by removing the 210.

Also note; I recently did a fresh OS install.

With 2 480's in SLI you can run 3 monitors, there is no need for the 210. Pull the 210, setup SLI again, hook your monitors up to the first 480 and you will be good to go. The 200/400/500 series cards can only run 3 monitors when in SLI.

I had a somewhat similar issue when I tried to run tri-sli 480's. I bet your third slot only runs at PCI-e x1. NVIDIA has designed their cards to only work on slots running at x4 or higher.

I decided to move from my 480's to a single 670 so I could run my 3 monitors off of one card.

My 3rd runs in x4 actually. I will attempt the 3 monitor then; it wasn't even a consideration because I was told this oh so long ago.

I will return with my results.

Your board can do x16/x16, make sure your cards are in those slots.

Yes they are both in the 16x slots

Although I am new to an nVidia set up, I am however not new to building. Thank you though smile.gif

Edit: The third HDMI out is actually a mini-hdmi, and I do not have any of those cables or adapters on hand to test; but this is my preliminary results.

From what I have read and heard in the past is that if you want a multi-monitor setup in SLI you have to have all the displays plugged into the first card, if you have them plugged into separate GPU's it doesn't work. If you get yourself a mini-HDMI cable that should fix your issue. I know for a fact it can be done, I think its just a matter of plugging all the monitors into one card.

TB13, I will take your word for it and order myself a Mini-HDMI cable. I'm sure if for WHATEVER reason it doesn't function, I can always hold on to it, because I'm sure I will need the mini HDMI in the future.

Although, I am still puzzled why I can't get it to work when my 210 is plugged in.

http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=364638

This individual states it simply cannot be done without using another GPU; which I have! He used an 8400 instead of a 210 and it works for him, why not me?
