Correct. It does not make any sense to me either, but here is why we have to.
My neighborhood are houses with 6 apartments in each, call it small blocks if you like, the company that built all these apartments made a deal with a provider which in our case is GET (Norwegian company).

So by connecting all apartments to their services (fiber internet, tv, radio and phone), we are required to have a basic package which includes TV and internet.
This is what they do everywhere in Norway, and it is only for neighborhoods like mine with many apartments and a "community" in lack of better words (Don't remember what its called in english hehe). But if you have your own villa, you can choose whatever you want, as long as they have cables in to your house.

EDIT: Still even if you have your own villa, many providers force you to buy cable and internet in the same package anyways, luckily not everyone does this.

Sometimes that happens here, in more rural areas.

Essentially, the cable/fiber company will agree to run a line out there only if they get guaranteed subscribers for so many years. Being faced with 56k modems or poor TV reception otherwise, it's not uncommon for a housing community to get together and agree to all get the service.

This is already the case with Comcast. You can't get any channels unless you have a little black box they give you for basically free. This happened for them, at least in my area, back when they switched to all-digital.

But now we have Direct TV, so neenerneener neeeener! thumbsupsmiley.png

Since moving to Canada I have probably watched less than 2 hours of TV in almost 2 years.

Frankly it is already terrible - it is more like the commercial channel with a few minutes of news or entertainment here and there. I think the thing that broke it for me was when I found a film I wanted to watch - 1.5 hours of film took a 4 hour programming slot.

That's right, 4 hours. 1.5 hours of film and 2.5 hours of commercials eek.gif

So I won't be paying for cable TV in our new place, just internet (which is still stupidly expensive) and Netflix. The cable companies can go die quietly in a corner for all I care - they don't even produce good programs anymore.

I really miss the BBC.

I got rid of my cable box over the summer. Seriously, the only TV show I actually follow anymore is Sons of Anarchy.

Otherwise, every show is just a rehash of the same stupid sitcom formula. Basically how much crude deviant sexual humor they can fit in to a half hour to hour long block. If I need my dose of crude deviant sexual humor, I'll just play Saints Row The Third.

Cable TV is useless anyways. I only have it as a benefit of my job.

Since I work for 'The company' I have all of my services for free.
