[NBC] Cable subscribers are about to get a sneaky fee - Page 9

AMC's brand became more valuable after the success of many shows, Mad Men, The Walking Dead, and Breaking Bad, for example. I fail to see how they were in the wrong for wanting more money.

Free market determines value. The value of AMC went up, ergo, the price they charge is allowed to go up. Don't like it? Vote communist. tongue.gif

The problem is when their demands are so much higher, there was no reason to demand double...that is just pure greed. These networks already see huge increases in revenue with these hit shows from advertising. To push that greed further and into the lap of the viewer, forcing providers to take it out on them is wrong.

I can say this from the perspective as a business owner, as well as a consumer.

If you are currently under the age of 35 and subscribe to cable or satellite you are part of the problem.

I didn't see that they nearly doubled their license fee. Totally my bad.

I agree with you otherwise. Being greedy does hurt a business just as much as a consumer. There certainly needs to be an even balance.

Actually, it is Dish and Verizon that are/were having issues with AMC.
When The Walking Dead took off, AMC viewership increased drastically, they suddenly were popular among a group they previously didn't cater to, the late teens to 30's. AMC decided that since they had one of the most popular series on television, they were suddenly worth a premium, increasing their per subscriber cost.
Now depending on the source, it was rumored that AMC wanted nearly double! Dish refused, so AMC pulled the license for them to broadcast. AMC then went on a campaign to get Dish subscribers to complain to Dish, trying to force Dish's hand. Eventually Dish gave in to "negotiations", signed on the dotted line, and brought AMC back.
Just another example of a Network forcing their will over a provider.

Sorry, that's what I meant.

I figured that AMC wanted too much money and that is why Dish dropped them. I really hadn't paid too much attention to the whole thing until contract negotiations came up with Verizon, and now AMC is once again going on the offensive and threatening Verizon with being dropped.

I just wasn't sure of the details on the actual costs involved.

Has this been confirmed? I know they didn't include it with Windows 8 but they do offer it as an additional download.

They are (were?) offering it for free, presumably at some point it will be a ~$15 upgrade. Doesn't sound like they would be killing it.
