[Anandtech] iPad 4 (Late 2012) Review

Quote:
The 4th generation iPad is a good evolution over the 3rd generation model. It doesn't fundamentally change the device or its function, it just makes it better. Battery life and performance are both improved over the iPad 3, and on the graphics side we finally have an SoC capable of driving good looking games at the iPad's native resolution. I don't know that there's substantial enough of a change to warrant an upgrade from the iPad 3 (unless you happen to be a game developer), but if you've been considering the iPad the 4th gen is a definite improvement over its predecessor.

Whats most interesting to me is the benches included a single core, 2.0 ghz medfield.
(And how it fared against the ARM parts)

I didn't expect Anandtech to even hint at recommending a Nexus 10 alongside the iPad 4, and yet, there it is.

Surprise, surprise.

Loving the battery life over the 3rd Generation.

Have had both wifi only models -

Best stats on the 3rd Gen was 12 Hours 36 minutes USAGE.
Best stats on the 4th Gen was 15 Hours 12 minutes USAGE.

What do you mean? Anand is one of the few trustworthy review sites out there nowadays.

I would still with the Nexus 10..... Faster where t matters in the CPU tests and equal too or slightly slower in GPU terms.

So the only improvement most people would see over the 3rd generation would see is battery life?

At normal tablet viewing distance, the slightly lower pixel density of the iPad 3/4 does really not show at all, so it's not really a disadvantage for the iPad. However, the bad color calibration, relatively low gamut performance and the inferior contrast ratio of the Nexus is evident at any distance. And that's why I think overall, the Nexus' screen loses to the iPad.

Personally, I find the much richer ecosystem of the iPad 4 far more crucial to its draw, even after considering the superior GPU and battery life of the iPad 4.

Keep in mind the 4th was just a minor upgrade, released only a few months after the iPad 3. But there are other things such as a new 720p front camera, and the effect of a better GPU can be seen in gaming applications.

Whoa, that Atom chip is still proving to be a contender. But I digress. The only thing that really has me interested is the battery life, I wonder how they managed to make it so efficient. Hardware specific software optimizations like they do with Macs?
