4:3 aspect ratio on an LCD?

I have a 19" LCD that has a 1280 x 1024 native resolution. Is it bad to play games in a resolution that has 4:3 aspect ratio, such as 800x600 and 1024x768? Doesn't this screw up the picture since the monitor isn't meant to display 4:3?

I found this on wikipedia, in the SXGA article:

Quote:
Displaying any 4:3 resolution on a 5:4 monitor, like a TFT with a native resolution of 1280x1024, will look stretched. But, on a TFT, displaying any other resolution than the native one is not a good idea anyway, as the image needs to be interpolated to fit in the fixed grid display.
