New computer - server not found (overclock.net)

Thread Starter
I just finished building a new rig and did a fresh install of windows xp sp1 on a 40GB... the only firewall on it is Nvidias (which i believe was on the driver cd for my 7950gt)...

Everything is working just dandy, but I can't access overclock.net.... on either Internet Explorer or Firefox! Firefox tells me that the connection timed out and that the server was taking to long to respond while Internet Explorer tells me that the site can't be found...

I tried turning off the nvidia firewall but that didn't solve the problem... I also tried pinging the site and all there were no packets lost... Right now, I'm typing this on my stepdad's Mac which is on the same internet connection as my comp...

I really can't figure out whats wrong and its driving me mad
Please help this overclock member get back on his favorite site >__<

You might have messed up your Windows Hosts file. Hosts is the name of the hosts file and not another directory name. It does not have an extension (extensions are the .exe, .txt, .doc, etc. endings to filenames) and so can appear to be a directory. It is to be found (if you have used default install procedures for your WinXP system) at C:\\Windows\\System32\\Drivers\\etc.

This can happen when one uses programs that block access to the net from certain server levels.

Rename the original hosts file to hosts.bak Create a new hosts file (no extension) and paste this into it:

Quote:
# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.

127.0.0.1 localhost

# The following comments have been added to Microsoft:
# To add entries that you wish to block:
# Place 127.0.0.1 and the host name of the
# server on the same line with a space between them
# as shown above. Do not remove the line above.
# You may remove this comment section if you wish.
If you find issues, simply delete this new hosts file and rename the original one by removing the .bak extension.

Nvidia's firewall? Please explain this... You are on a system that should not make use of the Nvidia Nforce firewall...

Sorry, I've built a new rig and just haven't updated my system specifications yet (550W Sunbeam NUU0, lanparty nf4-d, opty 165, 7950gt, 2x1gb ddr500 ballistix, etc)

You shouldn't use nVidia firewall for Nforce 4 chipsets. That's the reason to why it have been messed up.

I'll be sure to delete the firewall....

Ok so I'm pretty slow at this...

I'm under C:\\Windows\\System32\\Drivers\\etc.

The files inside are:

hosts (file 1KB)
hosts (iCalendar file 1KB)
hosts.msn (msn file 1KB)
lmhosts (SAM file 4KB)
services (file 7KB)
protocol (file 1KB)

What exactly do I do?? I didn't quite understand what Ropey suggested... I suck at this stuff
