1st attempt @ watercooling setup - Watercool Tri Sli GTX 580's or not??

ELLO to all.

i'm currently smoking an X79 rig,

Asus Rampage 4 Extreme,

3930k @ 4.8ghz,

Corsair H100 Closed Loop water Coooler

16gb Corsair Vengeange Ram,

120 & 60gb Corsair Force 3 SSD's

600gb WD Velociraptor

Enermax Revoloution 1250w PSU

3x EVGA SC GTX 580's

Corsair Obsidian 800D

Been running the H100 for about a year and now decided to go for the custom loop option as want to run the 3930K @ 5ghz without it melting! although have had it running 5ghz previously on H100 it wasnt fully stable, would BSOD after a few hours use due to temps being a bit too warm(85 degrees under load).

So, i have started gathering kit for my 1st attempt @ a custom watercooling system, currently i have

Apogee HD Waterblock

Phobya 150 Res

Swiftech MCP655 Variable speed Pump

XSPC RX360 Rad

XSPC RX240 Rad

Monsoon Compression Fittings 3/8" ID & 1/2" OD

Mayhems Pastel Black Fluid

Just waiting on my delivery of Koolance Black Hosing & some anged fittings.

Im stuck with what to do about the GTX 580's though!, do i spend more money on waterblocks for aging but highly capable cards and overclock them and wait another year for 8 series cards, or do i wait for the 7 Series cards to come out in March and watercool those??

Will there be enough of a performance hike to justify getting rid of overclocked/watercooled 580's for 780's??

Thanks

Well, the 780's are only about 4 months away. As far as how much performance you will get out of one of them, I seriously doubt it will be equal to 3 GTX 580's ... overclocked and water cooled.

How much memory are on the 580's? 1.5GB or 3GB? If it's the 1.5GB versions and you want to go high resolution, I'd hold off and get a 4GB 780 or 8xx. If they are the 3GB versions of the GTX 580's, you could keep them.

Next up .... GTX 580's, especially overclocked, will take a LOT more power. Make sure your PSU is up to it ... like about 1200 watts.

Finally, with 3 GTX 580's and an overclocked 6 core CPU, you are DEFINITELY going to want more radiators than a 360 and a 240. I'd consider AT LEAST 2 360s if not more (like 3 360's or a Phoyba 1080).

Thanks for replying, my cards are the EVGA SC 1.5 gb versions,
my screen is res is 1920 x1200
PSU i'm using is an Enermax 1250W

3 360's!!! Wow!, ive manage to remove the bottom cage from my 800D with the intention of installing another 360 but the plugson my psu stick out 2 far for me to be able to get another XSPC 360 in there as they are so wide plus with the fans on, i take it the RS360 which is a lot thinner wouldnt be able to cool as well as the RX version??.
As for a 3rd theres nowhere else in the case for me to stuff it!! LOL

Phobya 1080 looks to be a serious bit of kit but i'd prefer to keep everything inside the case understanding this may be less efficient. thumb.gif

Your cards are fine for 1920 x 1200, you'll be able to max everything in any game using 3x 580s, I wouldn't go for a 780 unless I was going surround, then the 1.5GB ram would hurt, still playable but you won't be able to max everything due to the ram limitations.

Apart from what was already mentioned regarding temps and PSU usage.. Here is a few scenarios you can pick..

Do you plan on having a quiet rig?
Low FPI radiators, low RPM fans, 800-1200 range..

or Noise does not matter?
High FPI radiators high RM fans, 1200-2000 range..

What is your water temperature aim at? Are you aiming at a low temp delta or something to just keep the temperatures in check while you over clock and your system is stable?
You can get by with 2x 360 radiators, it'll still beat the snot out of stock cooling.. People are forgetting that the max temperature that these GPU can take now a days is over 90-100° C, depending on what you pick above, you'll have your answer.

Ello, well be great to get gfx cards silient as the do get a bit noisy durin gaming, but main reason is to have a stable system at higher overclocks i.e 5ghz, have the corsair sp120 silent editions so up to 1400 rpm with high static pressure as the xspc rx360's are optimized for these type.
Temps i want to aim for as low as possible, 3x 360 rads gona be difficult to stuff in my 800d.
So you sayin 2 x 360's will give me a decent drop in temps, member earlier advised 3 would probably b what i'd need to keep temps in check!

3 would be better since you are over clocking and throwing a CPU in the same loop, but 2 is "do-able", you'll just have really warm rads..

You can start with just 2 and work your way up from there if you need it, that's the best part about water cooling... thumb.gif

Lets put it this way:
More rads and fans is always better. If you said 3 x 120.3 some of us (mainly me) would say you need 10 x 120.4 raddage.
But in the end, even just with 2 x 120.3, you will be much better off than air cooling. Quieter at idle and more cooling at full blast.

Also, you would get more performance with a thinner rad in push/pull than with a thicker rad in only push or pull.

Ok great, thanx for info, well i think ill probably just get the Cpu under water first, i think will be easier to get a 480 at the top, and work out a wat to create
Another 3 inches for a 360 down by psu.thumb.gif
