Little bit confused

I'm planning on crossfiring 2x HD6870's. I already have a 6870 - it's the stock fan model XFX released. The thing is, XFX don't do that specific version any more, they've got a different fan design.

I have this model - http://techreport.com/r.x/radeon-hd-6800/xfx-6870-3q.jpg

This is the "new" one - http://web225.extendcp.co.uk/fiercepc.co.uk/ebay/hosted/6870zhfc_2.jpg

Would it be okay to get one with the new fan design or are they different?

a better option would be to sell the HD 6870 for 90 - 100 bucks. spend another 150 bucks and get a HD 7950. a HD 7950 will be faster than the HD 6870 CF. it will provide the best possible and most consistent experience. You can avoid CF issues like microstuttering. also the HD 7950 has a vastly superior DX11 architecture with much improved tesselation and compute performance. the MSAA performance in deferred rendering engines like BF3, Farcry 3 is very poor on HD 6800 cards. HD 7950 will run cooler and quieter.

the OP has an ANTEC 300 (from sig rig). his choices are MSI HD 7950 or XFX HD 7950 DD because only these 2 cards can fit in antec 300 which supports max graphics card length of 11 inches (279 mm).

OP here are a few options. MSI HD 7950 twin frozr or XFX HD 7950 DD. the xfx cards come with 3 free games - Farcry 3, Hitman Absolution and Sleeping Dogs. the MSI HD 7950 adds 3 more games to that list- Call of Duty Modern warfare 2, Nexuiz, Dirt Showdown. total 6 free.

XFX HD 7950 DD (800 Mhz) - 220

For the love of God. This. Don't crossfire 6870s. I did it. Waste of so much money, horrible stutter due to the low VRAM I think.

Literally tried everything to fix it.

Surprisingly i can run it maxed out @1920x1080 and only have fps drops during certain cut-scenes, or when driving full speed through a dense area.

In response to the 7950 recommendations - i'm tight for cash this winter due to buying every bugger presents etc. I've only got about ~£80 - ~£100 to spare. A mate of mine works in a local computer store and he said he can bag me a HD6870 for about £80 brand new. I'm not really patient enough to wait much longer, to get a 7000 series card.

Edit: Still waiting for the answer to my original question tongue.gif

the cheapest XFX HD 7950 DD card costs 220. you can easily overclock it to 1 Ghz at stock voltage and easily run faster than HD 6870 CF. if you sell your existing HD 6870 card for 100 you have to spend 120. is that worth the extra 40 bucks over the HD 6870. definitely. if you can't spend it would be a pity. anyway the new cooler is not a problem. you can CF the new XFX new cooler version with your existing HD 6870.

To answer your question it should be fine.

Be warned, you won't have a good experience cross firing those cards. Sell the 6870 and get a 7870 if you can't get the 7950.

Bucks? I'm in the UK mate, it's good ol' pounds sterling lol. Also, thanks for answering my original question. I'll have to wait and see if i can perhaps scrounge some more cash and get a HD7950. If not, a 2nd HD6870 will tide me over for a few months.
