[Kotaku] The Good And Bad of Battlefield 3, One Year (Or So) Later - Page 10

link to my Battlelog http://battlelog.battlefield.com/bf3/soldier/Glycerin256/stats/226262637/

Having logged a ton of hours in the game and playing pretty constantly since release I think I can give a few balanced opinions.

1. I've been playing with my non-OC sig rig and don't have any stability problems. And I've using drivers that came out in MAY!!!! over 6 months old now! (I use these same drivers to play the new Hitman and FC3, too) The in game visuals (blue hue) can be tweaked using a few tools online. I have tried them but I leave it stock because I'm fine with it. (my friends 580 DC3 powered rig has had stability problems off and on though, especially recently and this sucked because I am basically his tech support team. Both nVidia and AMD need to get their butts in gear in the driver department)

2. VOIP. Yes, I wish there was VOIP that was integrated in the game so you could automatically talk to your team and squad on joining a server. To get around the issue, I made new friends and join on TS3 servers that are advertised in the servers I join. Ya, it's a pain, but oh well. Yes, this feature should have been included in the game.

3. Balancing. The game as been constantly rebalanced in its lifespan. In all honesty I'm grateful that the game is still supported. The balancing keeps the weapons fresh as long as you notice the changes or look them up on symnthic. I have almost all the weapons fully unlocked, so I can definately say that they all work once you learn their recoil and 'trigger pull' and how to set them up for the map. Every weapon has had it's place and has worked decently as long as you learn how to set it up correctly. You can learn that by watching levelcap or rival xfactor on youtube. Vehicle stats and dynamics are constantly touched up too. (75% of my game time is no vehicles in HC mode, such as TDM, SDM etc). I think it's safe to say if you haven't played within the last 6 months that you don't know the game anymore. The changing dynamics of using mines, helo perks, AA and weapon balances have really effected how I play today.

4. Lag. Yes, I have a dedicated Intel network card and 20Mb cable connection over DOCSIS 3.0 and even with a server ping of 30 I still get killed when I'm already back around the corner. Good players can exploit this and continue to fire even if you're under cover (just in case you or they are laggy) and they can hit you. It's not perfect, but what game is? I'm used to it for the most part and yes, I still get frustrated with it. (in contrast, my buddy lives 15 minutes away, has an mobo integrated network card and a leased TWC modem and you can always take my ping and add 25. And yes, he has more lag.)

5. Hackers. Weirdly enough, I haven't really had a problem with hackers. Maybe 1 or 2 every couple months. I just leave the server and use BBlog to put them on radar and stay away from them. Other times though, players are just good and are hot for a round or 2 and you are in a sucking moment. It happens, get over it. If you think they are hacking then report them and move on. There are tons of other servers to play on. Another note, I've never been an admin on BF3, but everyone has to run PBBans, and alot of the servers I play on are running FairFight and GCC streams, etc in addition. Between that and active clan members watching their own servers, I rarely run into problems.

6. So I preordered BF3 and in doing so got the B2K expansion at no charge. When they announced Premium I waited to see what that was all about. I decided that I liked the game enough to keep playing so I ended up getting it. I think I've got my moneys worth. I still enjoy playing BF3 and pwning newbs L:D)

7. Origin. I know this is a whole other subject, but I wanted to bring it up because it's part of the BF3 experience. I wish it didn't exist. It has more than it's fair share of downtime and doesn't bring enough features to the table to justify it's existence. And you'll only let me have 100 friends? (expletives*)

8. Maps. Some are better than others. Play on the ones you like, don't play on the ones you don't. Pretty simple, really. It's so fast and easy to change maps by just alt-tabbing and joining a new server. You don't even have to close the game or disconnect from the old one. +1 to battlelog for setting up that feature right.

9. Battlelog works good, especially with the extended stats from BBlog chrome and firefox extensions. If you don't have it, go get it. It's simple to install and works. One tip is to run the dark theme, it makes the whole thing look better.

Overall, it's one of the most fun games I've played and I'm going to continue playing!

I pre-ordered Battlefield 3, yet have only spent 68 hours playing it.
It just never 'clicked' with me, perhaps that's just my tastes changing as I get older or I don't like change. Either way, I quickly lost interest in it.

Add to this the DLC and I just couldn't be bothered.

It's integrated right in Better Battlelog (same as BBlog). Here's the link. http://getbblog.com/en/

1. Install (video instructions are provided)
2. open battlelog and notice the new icon, click on it.
3. click on "theme switcher", select dark theme
4. ???
5. sorry no profit, just a better looking interface smile.gif

The massive amount of DLC content is what kind of turned it off to me. I still play it everynow and then but not enough to buy what 3-4 DLCs now?

When I play it I do enjoy my time in game, just so we're clear.

Here's an image of the dark theme selection screen and what it already looks like. (this is not my image or my account. Also, this is an older version of BBlog)

I think that's the beauty of it though, there is a lot of good, varied DLC and relatively reasonable prices. You can pick and choose what you want and don't want.

However, what I think is a shame is that you cannot access the DLC until a week after Premium.. Premium should maybe offer more small content, more achievements/rewards and perhaps the queue priority, but, to not be able to play at the same time as Premium members is a shame.

I still love BFBC2 to this day and its my favorite shooter/battlefield game to date.

Agreed. Love BC2, still play it on occasion.

I stopped playing BF3 after Premium, not only was it boring, but they had to make a big slap-to-the-face Premium banner when you were killed, and spam me with Premium notices when I launched the game. Not only that, but Battlelog is a big POS, the game didn't run right on my 6950, the client-side hitting, all the weapons are exactly the same, etc... Overall, I'll see what happens with BC3. If they are going to milk the hell out of it, BF3 will be my last Battlefield purchase.

Haha, your avatar made your opinion predictable.

How is battlelog a POS? I'm just curious what you didn't like about it.
