Not quite.... to convert a 2-lane highway to 4 lanes.... you have to pave more road.

It's more like ten people shouting at someone all at once and that person still understands everyone simutaneous (technically not the same, but close enough). Superposition.

Thinking about this, if they develop gates that can simultaneously handle multiple light signals, you could potentially have a CPU that can have multiple instances of the same pipeline. Like an AND gate that emits, say, a ray of 475nm light, if two rays of 475nm light enter, while simultaneously doing the same thing but with a different spectrum of light. This is important because of two reasons:

1.
Currently, a pipeline, a complex network of gates controlled by a clock, can only handle 1 input signal at a time. This is because you can only have one electrical signal on any given electronic circuit. With optical processors, you would be able to put multiple inputs on a pipeline, and reliably get multiple outputs.
2.
Optical CPUs would lend themselves very well to an asynchronous circuit design. Currently, electrical gates have a problem called propagation delay, which is the length of time between the input voltage(s) becoming stable and the output voltage(s) becoming stable. The circuit clock is always set to accommodate the longest chain of logic gates. This is nice, but often input doesn't follow the longest chain of logic gates, essentially leaving the circuit idle, while it waits for the clock to open the flip-flop to store the output.

With an optical circuit, there would be multiple propagation delays corresponding to multiple wavelengths. If they could somehow make the inputs oscillate between different wavelengths, the gates could handle another wavelength of signal before the prior wavelength of signal stabilizes. If the time to cycle through all the available wavelengths is more than the propagation delay of all the gates in the longest chain of logic added, you would eliminate the need to control the gates and flip-flops with a clock.

That said, there would be clock to cycle through the wavelengths, so I guess it's still not technically "asynchronous".

I understand your reasoning, however who says there's just one "receiver". The same optical signal can hit an array of detectors simultaneously. I cannot wait to see what next gen CPU's are like. I personally hope they start from scratch and blow our doors off. biggrin.gif

Yes, but instead of taking double the space when moving to 4, those 4 lanes only take up the space of 1~ lane



While this is a great advancement and will end up creating CPUs far faster and with more bandwidth than are currently capable, I see optical based processors as a short lived invention. When these come out, probably sometime around 2020, it will only be another 5-10 years probably before we begin the quantum computing age and the performance of these optical CPUs is left in the dust

Some stuff hard to get, but I'm glad I read this, and some of the explanations in the thread. Very good stuff... My 5000+ BE was on 65nm. Can't wait for this to mature and start coming over to desktop CPU's. I remember watching about CPU's that use light on... was it the really old version of Discovery High Tech Toys? I think it was... That show used to actually be interesting when I was younger.
