New graphics card / CPU bottleneck?

Thread Starter
I'm in the process of deciding what graphics card to buy. It must be PCI Express, and I am leaning towards ATI because I have owned them in the past. Right now, the most graphics-intensive game I play is Quake 4, and my current card doesn't cut it. I'm not sure how many pipelines I need or whether I need GDDR2 or GDDR3, but I'm hoping to get a card that's cheaper and then unlock some additional pipelines and overclock it to a higher speed.

I've been wondering.. if I get a video card that's very powerful, will it be bottlenecked by my CPU?

edit - Oh and I almost forgot, I don't want a card that draws a ton of power. My PSU is kind of limited... I think I'm using about 300W right now.

Well that PSU will Limit you to what kind of GPU mate. I would say that a PSU upgrade was needed more 1st and then you can work on a Decent GPU.

A new PSU first. It will do good for your OC as well.

i know you prefer the ATI range..but consider the 7300GT with gddr3..its got a lot of potential and i think there is even a voltmod for it...and im sure it doesnt suck too much power

With that cpu overclocked like that, adding a better card, would be pointless till you replace that PSU.

ANd yes, chances are if you got a powerfull card your CPU would bottleneck the card, but I guess it depends on what you call powerfull, however untill the PSU is replaced bottlenecking would be the least of your problems.

^ That is a good answer sir! Unlike all the others that state "get a PSU", you understood the initial post. He made it clear that he wants to keep what he has and just upgrade the vid card. While the suggestions for the PSU are warranted and are all in all good advice, they do not answer the original question. With that in mind, a 7300 or 7600 series from nvidia would be ideal as they were designed for lower power use while giving you decent performance.

Also, only the higher end (7800, 7900, x1900) series cards will be bottlenecked by that CPU. Your rig is just fine.

Not necessarily. A new PSU will help his whole system and allow him to get a better graphics card (and I'm not talking about the "big" cards"). When doing upgrades it is imperative to get priorities straight, specially if you're money concious.

But you're missing the point sir. If you had, for example, suggested a new PSU and in addition to that, suggested a card, then you would have answered his question. But, that is not the case here. I never said the PSU idea was bad. What I did say was that you never answered his question.

Yeah your right. We kinda got side tracked, me mostly because I just had a PSU go bad do to a recent card upgrade. Rep+

Why do I even need a new PSU? Just how much power do graphics cards draw? 100W?

The Antec power supply I have right now has enough power for my system and is stable enough.
