MSI 7970 Lightning Crossfire (GHz both or Normal Both)

Thread Starter
Hey all,

So I just got a 2nd 7970 to pair with my original lightning. Unfortunately without realizing it I purchased the GHz edition card. That being said I have a card with and a card without the "GHz Edition" option. Should I flash the GHz to the standard lightning speeds, should I flash the standard Lightning card to a GHz edition card, and does it matter that they are different right now for CrossfireX?

Also, if I am flashing, how!?

Appreciate the help.

the MSI HD 7970 Ghz Lightning Boost runs at 1150 Mhz . the older model runs at 1070 Mhz. you don't need to flash the BIOS. you could manually overclock your older model to run at 1150 Mhz. you could probably achieve that at stock voltage or with slight voltage tweaking. max out power option to +20%. running two cards in CF means you have to manage heat and temps. set your fan speed accordingly to keep core temps around 70c - 75c and VRM temps below 90c.

No, They both run at 1070 and the GHz edition will boost to 1150.

yeah if you max out power control to +20% the Ghz edition will always run at 1150 mhz without any clock throttling. so just manually overclock the older model to 1150 Mhz and test as a single GPU. then enable CF and test.

Why wouldn't I just flash the bios into a GHz edition?

Overclocking just takes a couple of clicks and you're done.

Flashing is a lot more risky. Why take a chance to end up with a bricked card if something goes wrong when you don't have to?

Plus, you don't know yet if the card will be stable at ghz clocks 24/7.

very well said. manual overclocking and testing is the best option. thumb.gif

I tried several games, nothing ran about 30 frames, disabling crossfire seemed to do better then both of them. Specifically when testing Metro 2033 I went from very high, to high, to medium settings and even had a benchmark stating that I should be getting a specific framerate with the medium settings of at least ~115 AVG FPS (~65 w/ single card). Source: http://www.pcper.com/files/imagecache/article_max_width/review/2012-01-07/metro-1920-bar_0.jpg

I couldn't get above 20 with it on/off on either of the three modes. It would always have the exact same fps graph after a minute of running the benchmark run.

Any ideas?

P.S. That was with the +20% and 1150 set clocks. Same results with default settings.

Bad crossfire bridge? I found out that when there are two cards with different speeds crossfire will just run as lowest cards' speed.

yeah check with another crossfire bridge. also install 12.11 beta 11 and 12.11 cap 2 . first test with CF disabled and record your scores. and then do the same with CF enabled.
