ATI Image quality VS Nvidia Image quality showdown

So, ppl always wonder which is best. Ive read very many times that people say that ATI's image quality is so much better. Well, we will take a look at the different aspects of what each brand can serve us:

NOTE: The Nvidia card used is the 7900GTX. ATI's card is X1950XTX. Remember that these cards are DX9, not the newest tech.

Well start out with some very close up comparisons with COD2:

Wow! As you can see, very close up, NVIDA has better image quality, much more clearer wall to the left of that pole thing. Yet, if you watch really really closely you can see that ATI is kind of smoother.

Here, again it seems like Nvidia's card is giving stronger contrasts between all the different objects, and kind of gives a better flooring detail. However, if you study for example the wall in the background, ATI's image quality is a little smoother.

Ah, a test of AA quality. Here, Nvidia with its special features basically own ATIs sample. Nvidia's sample is much much better.

This image with cables tells us the opposite than what the above one did. ATI's sample of the cables, and even the houses in the background seem quite alot smoother than NVIDIA's.

Now, moving over to HL2:

Look at the text. Nvidias card draws quite many more thin bits than ATI's.

Wow, here is a perfect example of my opinion on the battle of the image quality. As you can see ATI to the rightmost with full eyecandy is much smoother, yet NVIDIAs is more bold.

Now lets see an interesting picture from the 3dmarks:

Look at text ^

Now, if you really want to find out which would be best not only in comparing in tiny zoom in screen shots, but a gameplay video too, you should check this link out, go to the bottom of the page and look at the BF2 gameplay video.
You can see that by using Nvidias driver optimizations the screen glitches some places and can get quite annoying. ofcourse, you can disable the driver optimizations, but at a loss of performance.

In conclusion:

I found a very good quote in the conclusion at the review:

Quote:
Of course, when you’re playing a game, whether it’s something slow-paced like World of WarCraft, or a fast-paced shooter like Half-Life 2, it’s up to you to decide what matters most. Are you going to notice the NVIDIA optimizations? Is turning them off going to make it better for you? Are you going to prefer ATI’s generally smoother 6xAA or the better boldness and contrast of NVIDIA’s 4x technique? Or, let’s be honest, with differences so small, are you going to go for the card that gives you the best value?
This basically sais it all. I prefer ATI's smoothness, and i dont like the glitching that NVIDIA's driver optimizations gave. However, in these close up pictures, generally NVIDIAS's pictures look alot better than ATI's, but in real gameplay with an entire screen to look at i think ATI looks generally better. This is only my personal opinion, you shouldnt take it into considering if youre stuck on the decision between the two brands. NVIDIAs boldness is probably quite an advantage in games like Splinter cell where you have to see in the dark, and you really need good contrasts to know where to go and not to go.

One thing to take in consideration, a thing that might turn the tides completely is that ATI can use HDR and AA at the same time. Only the new G80 series from NVIDIA is fully capable of running SM3+HDR+AA at the same time.

So, basically what this article, and i, am trying to prove is that none of these are really better. Its just up to a personal preference of which ones suites you most, and i I hope this helps anyone whos buying ATI or Nvidia DX9 cards, and want to know what the difference is, or anyone just curious

Here is the article

Nvidia can use AA and HDR, only the 7 series cannot. The 6 series and the G80 can.

I question the validity of this article: What ATI series and nVidia series were being compared to?

It says at the top, 7900GTX vs X1950XTX.

Remember something to take into account is that some games are optimized for either Nvidia or ATI. Thus using HL2 as a comparison game is flawed as its optimized for ATI..Try using some Nuetral games to the rule.

I'm gonna have to say that I cannot tell a difference in any of those images except for the one with the 3 fences and this one:

Although I can tell the color contrast on the last image.

And the one from HL2 showing the branches, there is DEFINITELY no difference between the thin branches there. Not that I can see anyways...

The GeForce 6 series can't either. You think Nvidia would really take a step *back* in image quality?

Because it's SM2, 6 and 7 series can have HDR and AA at the same time, except the 8 series can do both SM3 and HDR at the same time.

Well yeah. Nvidia took a different route in the HDR+AA game, and lost.
