Looking to buy my brother a laptop

Thread Starter
Hey there,
I'm wanting to buy my brother a laptop for his birthday, as he could use one for when he commutes home from university.
Seeing as I'll most likely forget to mention something, I'll just copy the template from the Read me thread.

What is your maximum budget?
The cheaper the better, but somewhere under a thousand dollars.

What country are you in?
I live in Canada.

What will be the uses of this laptop?
School work, and some casual gaming (WoW, League of Legends, etc)

Do you have brand loyalty or care which brands we select for you?
Not really.

What screen size do you require?
15"+

What screen resolution do you require?
1366x768 minimum

Are you looking to buy NEW or would refurbished/recertified/used be okay?
Refurbished is fine, but would prefer new.

How long should the battery last? (Under optimal conditions, no movies/games/heavy internet)
4 hours or more.

What games would you like to play with your laptop? And on what settings?
WoW, LoL, etc. Medium settings atleast.

What operating system do you need? (if any)
He doesn't require one.

Is there a certain style of laptop you want? (aluminum, black, gaming, etc.)
Doesn't matter.

How much hard drive space do you need?
500GB+

Do you need any special hardware? (blue ray, webcam, specialty ports, etc.)
Nope.

Is there anything else we need to know?
That should be everything.
Thanks in advance for your help!

8 hours of battery life. Dedicated video card should run LoL and wow just fine. Screen resolution is the minimum but fits you the best.

Look for the Lenovo Y580 and you'll be set with that. $850 for an i7, GTX 660M, 8GB ram, and a 750GB HDD in a 15" machine.

Seems to be the sweet spot as of late for budget laptop buyers. biggrin.gif

I thought that too, but does it provide 4 hours of battery life?

I always see people preaching against Acer, but i am not sure why. I am a bit skeptical myself. Also not sure why.

Poor quality. Most people who buy an Acer generally suffer problems after about a year and a half. I didn't suffer one problem with any of the machines I owned within two years, aside from this one...but that's because this machine was already two years old when I bought it. wink.gif

The two machines I had from Toshiba happened to be the Qosmio X505 and the Portege. So the two top end models. >.> Figures I didn't have any problems. tongue.gif

But yeah... Acer... I dunno. I've always heard just plain original horror stories from owners and friends of owners of Acer machines in general. blinksmiley.gif
