Custom length cable question

Thread Starter
Hey, so I want to make some custom length cables. I have googled this but havent been able to find much. On a fully modular psu the 24- pin has some double wires and such. I have 18 awg wire so would I just rewire it using the exact same pin layout? Or 1-1? I know the psu decides where to route power and such so it seems 1-1 would be a bad idea unless the psu came 1-1 from the factory. This may be a obvious answer but thought I would ask just in case I dont have to do more work than needed.

thanks.

For the most part you need to stick with the factory layout. In some cases you can swap same-voltage cables around but it depends on the psu and is something you will have to try and see. But don't do 1 to 1 unless your psu is wired the same as the mobo connector.
You obviously can't stick a 12v wire where a ground would go, for example.
What you can do is make a 1 to 1 extension, since the motherboard connectors will be the same.

Well said Mandrix. Unless your PSU uses 1-1, then only way to get 1-1 is by using extension. Swaping wires around is possible, but only if you swap wires with the same voltage. Also, even with proper swapping, some PSU's reject this. Hence, ensure that you keep you sketch of the pin layout safe. thumb.gif
