2 SSD in Raid0 + 1 HDD for data storage

Thread Starter
Hi guys,

I want to setup a raid0 array for 2 Vertex 4 SSDs.
My question is can I do that and still use my HDD as data storage? I'm confuse since the manual says that when SATA is set to RAID mode in BIOS, all ports will work in RAID mode.

I've read somewhere where it says anything that is not in the array will work in AHCI mode. Is this true? Does this means I can still plug in as many HDDs as I want and they still work in AHCI mode?

Specs are in my sig.

Thanks in advance! thumb.gif

I personaly would suggest a raid card, I got a 2 slot one that goes in the pci e slot.

But soon as you set your raid up via bios as you mentioned, it will take 2 of the sata ports, so it wont care what the others are, id normally do the raid then plug the other hdds in later.

Hope that helps you

So just to be sure, the HDD that will be plugged in later on will work in AHCI?

Yes.

Keep the lone drive(s) unplugged until Windows is installed. Then reconnect them. If they don't immediately show up in My Computer, go into Disk Management and assign a drive letter. No formatting required. thumb.gif

Edit - Note, that if you previously had your OS on the hard drive, you'll want to do some manual cleanup... deleting the old Windows/Users folders, for example, once you've copied everything that you need from them.

Bit late to the party here. wooo my first rep !

What I wanted to add was that, as I mentioned the pci card, is considered hard ware raid. and you do something like control + j to enter the bios for that raid.

The mother board should support raid on its own, which will allow you to raid, I think thats hardware raid.

But I wante to add that when you go into computer management as you are doing thats software raid, and much slower.

Id hate to see you try raid on software, if your now stepping into raid now, you may as well go the extra mile and get that pci e card, or look at the motherboard alternative for them extra speeds
