Safe to use PSU that has been in the parts box for 3 years?

I have http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817153043 that has been in the misc crap box since someone on here told me a pair of 5870s would cause it to burn my house down. I was wondering if it is a bad idea to use it to test out a i5 3570 and a 7970? I'm having a weird problem and I think it may be the HX850 that used to be in my sig rig. Just want to isolate the PSU. PSU tester says the TT is ok.

No. Electronics have shelf lives - look for the expiration date - it should be on there somewhere.

As far as I understand it PSU's do lose capacity over time. I was looking for some community feedback about throwing a 70 percent load on a 4-5 year old PSU. Go away.

As long as it's not caked in dust and hasn't been exposed to mass humidity then you shouldn't have a problem.
My Thermal Take 750 watt has been running almost non stop for ... hmm when was it released... 2006ish.. so 6 years.
