Help me squeeze all I can out of worthless lump of metal (EAH6950 DCII)

So, bought the card a year ago, and hated every second of it. My list of quarrels:

  • The only 6950 that can't be unlocked by BIOS to a 6970
  • Locked voltage (Trust me, I've tried)
  • Seems to hate all drivers that didn't come out a year ago
  • Microstutter on pretty much any game I try to play with it
  • And, the icing on the cake... It performs like arse on Far Cry 3, a game I've been waiting years for.

Since I've just been made redundant and will probably not be able to afford a new card for... A while, I want to see if anyone else on here has had to deal with this waste of 3 PCI slots, and maybe has some tips.

I'm using AMD's 12.11 11beta drivers, before that I used Asus' 8.86 drivers (No stutter with Asus' drivers, but performs marginally worse on FC3).

Does anyone have any recommendations, or workarounds for FC3? I'm not gonna lie, it's a priority at the moment.

Thanks guys!

I have had a XFX HD 6950 2GB for close to 2 years and its been very stable. i only overclock slightly at stock voltage. I am currently running 12.11 beta 8 and i just finished Hitman Absolution. Over the past 2 years I have had no major issues with any game except for RAGE which took quite a bit of time to get a working driver. I have always stuck with the latest WHQL drivers.

Use the 12.11 beta 11 with 12.11 CAP 2 . both are required for the best possible HD 6950 performance in Farcry 3. also its known that Farcry 3 requires the game patches 1.01 and 1.02 for the best performance and stability. make sure you have the patches installed. your HD 6950 can play Farcry 3 at high settings without MSAA.

tried disabling ULPS?

Also, disabling post FX completely is helping everybody substantially.

Dare I suggest selling/trading it for a GTX 580?

1)Mine cannot be unlocked either, and what's worse, uses Sapphire custom VRM design which works like crap biggrin.gif
2)Impossibru. The PWM driver supports software control. Tried the very latest version of ASUS GPU Tweak? Some users report luck with it.
3)Tried CCleaner after uninstalling old drivers, then reinstalling? Updated DirectX? Run latest Framework?
4)Checked that CCC isn't screwing with your frequencies? I had a similar problem on mine, with cat12.11. Reverted to .10, and swoosh! Manually overclocked the card to the CCC limits, and no stutter anymore.
5)It shouldn't. Mine does just fine.
