I cant decide between these two cards as they both have pros and cons. From what I gather the 7970 has the most raw power but I have heard people say that the 680 (and nvidia in general) gives a better overall experience and less problems(fan boy talk?). I also would like features like physx and adaptive vsync.

What should I get and why?

These are the cards:

7970 GHZ edition for the win, unless you're folding in which case the GTX, if you don't know what folding is, you don't need the GTX.

Comps

I do a bit of folding but my only consideration when buying a card is gaming performance.

thanks for the reply!

I will say i have the GTX 680 CU II myself and i will soon sell my card as i play games in 1440P and the GTX 680 CU II OC only has 2 GB of RAM and thats not enough for 1440P
So if you play games in 1080P i would say get the 680 if you play games in 1440P the 7970 would be better as its faster and have more RAM
Where are you from? you might be interested in buying my Asus GTX 680 CU II OC if you dont live too far away

The 7970 beats the 680 in the majority of benchmarks and most resolutions to be honest. So the VRAM isn't really too important in this sort of comparison unless you're doing multi-monitor.

Yes the 7970 beats the 680 in most tests but the 680 has adaptive vsync which i think is the one of the best things ever made by Nvidia i refused to play games without adaptive vsync after seeing it and playing with it on

that is what I was thinking tbh why would the 680 be better at 1080p but not 1440p? I cant see myself getting a multi monitor setup any time soon so 2gb and above of vram is fine for me.

Nope not for Far Cry 3 or Sleeping Dogs or Sniper Elite or even good old Crysis 1 if i try to play those games in 1440P with everything maxed out and without AA the games lag like hell and its even worse with 2xAA or higher
I will sell my 2 GB Asus GTX 680 CU II OC and buy a MSI GTX 680 Twin Frozr 4 GB card and see if that helps if not i will buy one more so i will have 2x 4GB cards in SLI

between those 2 options go for ASUS HD 7970 Matrix Platinum. there is another good option. MSI HD 7970 Lightning boost edition with 1150 mhz boost speeds. 3 free games.
