Seagate ST31500341AS hard drive will not initialize (I/O error)

Alright, I have tried everything I know to do. Coming here as a last resort effort. Please read fully before suggesting a solution because I have tried a lot already.

-When I go into Windows 7 disk management and attempt to initialize the drive, it tells me it cannot do it because of an I/O device error. Obviously I cannot format it until I initialize the disk.

-Yes I have tried different sata cables and different ports. Same result in all of them.

-The drive makes some clicking sounds on startup right before the bios screen appears.

-I have attempted to do a drive wipe with kill disk and a some other drive wiping programs, but they won't touch it. Killdisk said that "The MBR needs to be fixed."

-Seatools recognizes the drive and tells me I need new firmware. I downloaded the firmware .iso from seagate. Booted that on startup, installed the firmware...didn't change anything. When I do disk checks with seatools they fail to run properly.

I have no idea what to do now. I bought this used but I know for a fact it was tested beforehand.

Go to www.dban.org and nuke the disk, if that doesn't fail the clicking can't be good either way.

Says that Dban failed.

Seems like programs can recognize that the drive exists but any attempts to do anything with it ultimately fail.

Disk is screwed, if DBAN can't nuke the disk it's a hardware fault. take it back and get your money back.

The only other option you've got, put it in a working machine and see if something like HDTune can see it and check the SMART status.

I agree. You may be able to nuke it with a linux tool like DD, but if you're getting I/O errors like that you'll never be able to format it...

I'd be curious to see HDTune's Health tab for the drive. It can fetch the SMART info even if it isn't formatted. It certainly sounds like the drive is a paperweight.
