no true GTX 580 successor for the rest of us?

Thread Starter
That would be the Tesla K20... a full-blooded Kepler GK110.

Is the GTX 580 the last of its kind? There's a certain pride in owning that badass card, knowing it's the real deal.

And i heard the GTX 780 is only a refreshed GK104, bah. Where's the 250 TDP card i can get.

the K20 is indeed on sale, but for $3000. BAAHHH!

You 'heard' that the 780 will only be a refreshed GK104? Where do you 'hear' that?

Frankly I'd be shocked it that's true (at least, if 780 is the highest-end single-gpu card of the next generation).

I'd bet that the 780 will have 50% more GPC's and memory bus width/capacity vs. GK104. IOW a part with 6 GPC's, 48ROP's, 384-bit memory bus, etc. In that config of course it'll be more rectangular in shape (being 2 x 3 instead of 2 x 2 like in GK104), but I wouldn't suppose that'd cause any major issues, and likely fit within a reasonable power envelope.

Whether or not this fits your 'criteria', I wouldn't know. But my bet is the 700 series is going to be more bad-ass, and NOT based on the 4 GPC architecture of the GK104 ... but only time will tell.

yes i saw lots of articles referring GTX700 series will have mere 15-20% improvement over GTX600 series and rather a refresh of GK104 just like the transition from GTX480 to GTX580 was......the real DEAL will be arriving in 2014 'MAXWELL'

Well, I hope not. But I have nothing to offer in the way of proof, so ... who knows. At least it'll likely be coming out pretty soon if that's all it is ... and I'm betting this also means the next AMD series will just be a refresh as well.

Hopefully nV at least makes it a 384-bit 3GB 48 ROP model, even if the core stays largely the same.
