Trying to overclock an FX-8350 - Page 2

Thread Starter
Everything is stable at stock with ram set to DDR3 800. I'll try to set back voltage at 1.45V and multiplier at 22.5 with CPU/NB at 2200 and test again.

I'm hitting about 44 C under load right now. How much headroom do you guys think I'll have as far as a max overclock ?

Personally, I'd leave it at stock and set the RAM back to what you had it at before when it was crashing. If it crashes, you'll know it was the RAM or the CPU/NB needs to be set manually maybe. If not, we move on down the list.

Did what you said, prime95 still running with no errors right now.

All CPU related is at stock, only settings in bios I changed are ram.

Timings set to 9-10-9-27. Then I set it to DDR3 1866 manually. Voltage is also set at 1.65v.

I honestly don't know which CPU temp I'm getting is right. Looking at HW monitor, I have two CPU temps listed. Which one is right ? I imagine coretemp is just flat out wrong ?

This is idle temp, so if it's really idling at 40 C then that might be why my overclocks are causing system freezes. I don't understand why I would have such high temps though. I can play Far Cry 3 for hours without any crashes. I have had a few BSOD playing the game but I'm rather positive it's due to the game being buggy and not heat, as they were incredibly random.

Make sure ALL power saving features are disabled in bios if you haven't already!

My Thurban loves C&Q but but the Vishera won't tolerate it at all. Things like APM, Core C6, C1E etc all have to be disabled. There are many others having issues with Prime95 on a Vishera, you're not alone.

I can't read the last posts image (on my little BU machine) for the temps but if either core or CPU Socket temp is reading 40c idle you have issues.

8350 OC'd running a Hyper 212? Might need to improve the cooling solution.

Yea I might need to look into better cooling. According to Aida64 my socket temp is idling at 36 C. All the cores are at 18 C though.

I would think the Hyper 212 would do a better job.. It's not that bad of a heatsink. Should be much better than the stock one.

Your idles look fine.

The only temps that matter are your load temps. Start up Prime and see how high they get. You want to focus on the core temps, keep them under 62C. The socket temp probably shouldn't get up to 67-70C but it isn't as important. It's also easy to cool if you can manage to get a fan aimed at the socket backplate. It will definitely run hot before the cores will though, so watch for that. If it starts getting hotter, it will make it harder for the cores to keep cool.

By the way, some people take wildly different approaches, I'm not going to tell you to do something that I'm not 100% sure won't roast your chip. Some people let everything run into the 70s, I don't.

As stated above, disable APM, Core C6, C1E, C&Q, and Turbo core. You don't want these features changing voltages/frequencies if you're going to overclock. It's best to just set it at 1 speed/voltage and test for stability.

Ok, thanks for the info. I disabled all of those features in the bios. Tomorrow I'm going to try to slowly increase the multiplier after changing the voltage and report back as high as I can get it stable.

Running intel burn test for a couple of passes, my socket temp gets to 70 C. The cores however only got up to 53 C. This is at stock. Pretty drastic difference in temps...

The socket temp is a little worrying but cores look perfectly fine.

So i tried setting my voltage to 1.4v and only put the multiplier at 20.5 for a 4.1Ghz overclock. the instant i clicked start on intel burn test my system hangs. I dont understand what the problem is. I made sure the CPU/NB was set to 2200.

I then tried it with the same voltage but put the multiplier back at stock and my system stole froze when stress testing it right away.
