Excessive Writing?

My two day old Intel SSD is already up to 100GB in host writes. I have only installed W7 and a few programs that total 25GB. I just watched it go from 99.63GB to 101GB in under fifteen minutes. All I have open is Chrome.





-Page file set to 2048MB and it is still on the SSD
-Superfetch/Prefetch are off
-Hibernation is off
-Defrag is off
-TRIM is on

It likely came with a few GB of writes from the factory.

You have a pretty fresh W7 install, updates perhaps to account for that 1.37 GB ?

Unless you do a fresh install of Windows everyday, I wouldn't worry about it. Around 5-10GB host writes per day is normal. That's not even 1 P/E cycle and even TLC NAND are rated for 1,000 P/E cycles minimum (e.g. Samsung 840). MLC NAND on the Intel SSDs are rated for 3,000-5,000 P/E cycles minimum.

That amount of browser cache would be pretty hefty.

1.3 GB over 15 minutes equates to ~1.48 MB/sec.

That's a relatively small amount of writes, though.
At this point it is outside of the realm of reasonable concern.

I moved Chrome's cache to my HDD.


Looking at Resource Monitor it seems like a bunch of Chrome TMP files are writing anywhere from 12,000-120,000B/sec.

Seriously, what for? I can understand moving the cache to a RAM disk for even better responsiveness but why get an SSD if you're gonna dump the stuff it can speed up to the HDD anyway? Seriously, the SSD is more likely to die of some random controller failure than of running out of P/E cycles. To give you some perspective, a 256GB MLC SSD should be able to stand 768TB worth of writes in its lifetime minimum. That's equivalent to around 420GB worth of NAND writes per day for 5 years.
