Will this 5.1 Speaker Layout work?

Recently we upgraded our TV to a new 55" LED 3D TV. Though I absolutely love it...I've come to realize that my decade-old audio system is just not going to work anymore. Where my old TV had RCA/Component Video/S Video ins and outs...the new TV comes equipped with 5 x HDMI ins (1 with Audio Return Channel) and a single Digital Optical Out. Unfortunately - my old Audio system does not have either (Was HDMI or Optical even available in 2002 when I bought it?).

So - I will purchasing a new set-up in the next week or 2. Though I've been researching and checking...I've come to the conclusion that my TV room and the furniture I own is not "ideal" for speaker placement. As such - This is the best speaker locations I can come up with. Additionally - I will have to mount these speakers on the wall (near the ceiling) to even make this work.

I've read alot about poor speaker placement essentially nullifying a good 5.1 system...so before I spend an arm and a leg on good speakers...will this placement work.

A few notes here: I am lousy at drawing diagrams...and even worse at labeling them. The dotted line to the right is not a wall...but open space that leads to my kitchen. The couch is a 3 piece sectional. It only fits in the room against the wall it is on. Those wierd Bell shaped solid black icons are where I planned on placing speakers.

Why not just move the TV parallel with that wall so it's directly facing the couch? Then you would have the front speakers in their correct positions.

It was something we initially tried when we first bought the house...but the hookups are all against the wall with the couch...Also - there are A/C vents along the top of that wall and no power outlets on it either. We have a really nice corner unit that fits the TV perfectly and keeps the area in front of the couch still usable for my son to play around.

Not saying that it is impossible to do...just this would be more convenient. If it works.

Edit:
I just remembered something else about why we didn't use that wall. There are light switches galore on the right side of it. When we initially thought of using that wall...the TV would not be centered on the couch...and we thought it was really annoying.

Would you have a wide enough entry (at the top) to walk into the room if you set it up like this?

Unfortunately not. The drawing is not 100% accurate down to the inch, and it also doesn't show that the wall indents by nearly 1 foot at that open space to the right of the TV and to the left of the door on the diagram. That is actually an archway that leads to a hallway.

The length of the couch is a hair under 14 ft...and the width of the room is a hair under 15 ft. technically - it would fit...but noone could get around it.

I was actually meaning to put it in front of that indent you showed where the room looks wider?

Yeah - The width of the room from the opening to the wall is just a hair short of 15ft. The couch (length across the back) is just a hair under 14ft. Leaves about 1 ft of room. The ft increments on the diagram start before the picture does...so it looks like its 18ft wide...but the wall doesnt start until the 3ft increment line.

Also - that opening is basically an archway...and rather than being a flush archway...it sticks out from the wall about 10 inches. here's what I mean:

You should probably just figure out a way that you can run cables so the TV can be flush against the top wall then. The only other way would be to have the TV setup as an island and have the couch against the left wall, but then you'd need to run cables under the carpet or through a cord cover that matched your floor color.
