Cant Install Asus Xonar STX?

hey guys,

i just got the XONAR essense stx. I installed it into my pcie slot, i pluged in the molex connector, i turned on my computer and turned off the Azalia audio codec in the bios, saved the setting and let my computer boot to desktop. My computer did not detect the card at all, and my sound still works and is coming out of my home theater system even though i disabled the audio codec in the bios? is that right? Should i not be hearing any sound if i disabled the codec?

I am connected to my VSX yamaha home theater receiver via hdmi directly into my gtx470.

Do i need t uninstall the nvidia audio codecs too? could that be the reason why my card isnt being detected?

First off, did you install the Xonar's drivers? I recently put a Xonar DSX into my HTPC, and I don't recall Windows picking up on it on its own.

Second, I forget if the STX has a SPDIF header, but essentially that is how you would need to link the sound card to the video card to get the sound card's audio sent over the video card's HDMI. You will need to connect your receiver to your STX directly, and then adjust the Windows audio devices to make sure the STX output is the default.

Third, someone can correct me if I'm wrong here, but as best I can tell if you use a GPU with HDMI for audio output what happens is that the raw PCM audio stream is sent over HDMI and then whatever is on the other end is assumed to be able to deal with that. At least for formats like AAC and MP3. DD and DTS type formats would generally trigger a SPDIF condition and just send the untouched audio straight through.

Sounds like your GTX470 is the default sound device. Install the newest STX driver if you haven't and set it as default device in Control Panel>Sound.

I got it to work, i had to download those custom unified drivers since this thing has no support what so ever from Asus themselves
