Need help with first PC Build

Thread Starter
This is my first custom built PC and here are the components I think I'm gonna use:

PS: I'm want to keep the price as close to or under $800 (USD)

CPU: Intel Core i5-2500K Sandy Bridge 3.3GHz (3.7GHz Turbo Boost) Quad Core Processor
MoBo: ASUS P8Z77-V LK LGA 1155 Intel Z77 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard with UEFI BIOS
Memory: G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600
Case: COOLER MASTER HAF 912
Graphics Card: EVGA SuperClocked 01G-P3-1557-KR GeForce GTX 550 Ti
PSU: COOLER MASTER eXtreme Power Plus RS500-PCARD3-US 500W ATX12V v2.3 Power Supply
Hard Drive: Seagate Barracuda ST31000524AS 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive
Optical Drive: LITE-ON DVD Burner - Bulk Black SATA Model iHAS124-04 - OEM
Fans:
COOLER MASTER Megaflow 200 R4-LUS-07AB-GP 200mm Blue LED Case cooler (x2)
COOLER MASTER R4-L2R-20AC-GP 120mm Blue LED Case cooler (x2)

Note: I would like to buy all this from one website for shipping purposes, right now all of these components are from Newegg.com

I'm not much of a gamer but I do occasionally play games such as minecraft, tf2, half life, and counterstrike. However I mainly use my computer for photo editing using photoshop and a little bit of video editing using Sony Vegas. I do a little bit of coding on the side for a Intro to Computer and Software engineering class in HS. I want this computer to last a while!

I think this build should be a little bit better. It isn't all from one website, but it is price optimized including shipping. You can buy everything from Newegg.com but it costs $855.
If you want to drop prices even further, then you can get a 7850 instead which should still outperform the 550 ti, but is considerably cheaper than the one below.

I would also get W8 instead of W7 because W8 performs better. Most of the complaints about W8 hinge on change resistance rather than actual problems with the OS.

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

CPU: Intel Core i5-3570K 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor ($214.99 @ Amazon)
Motherboard: Biostar TZ77A ATX LGA1155 Motherboard ($109.98 @ Outlet PC)
Memory: G.Skill Ares Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($37.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($69.99 @ NCIX US)
Video Card: PowerColor Radeon HD 7870 GHz Edition 2GB Video Card ($229.99 @ Newegg)
Case: Cooler Master HAF 912 ATX Mid Tower Case ($49.49 @ SuperBiiz)
Power Supply: SeaSonic 450W 80 PLUS Gold Certified ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply ($79.64 @ Newegg)
Optical Drive: Lite-On iHAS124-04 DVD/CD Writer ($17.89 @ Outlet PC)
Total: $809.96
(Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available.)

If you want to save some money on an OS; you can always use Linux. I suggest Mint 14. It has easy integration and you can run a Windows OS within Virtual box later. If you want to strictly run Windows; just use the Linux Mint OS until you save enough to get a Windows OS. You have a decent setup for your build. The sandy bridge Intel is an excellent chip. I have not looked at the specifics of your system choices or the prices concerning a configured alternative system; you should be fine with what you have configured. I am sure there are many people here on the forum that could offer alternative choices and pricing differences.

An AMD system is a money saving alternative; but the Intel 2500k is an excellent chip that will outperform an AMD chip when editing and converting video. Just remember that you ultimately must choose the components you will be satisfied with now and in the future.

Good Luck!!!!

is there a huge performance difference between the 3570k and 2500k i5? also is the 450 watt power supply enough for that graphics card?
