The point is that if you mess up with another compound it won't matter because they aren't capacitive or conductive, and so are safer. Since there is no performance benefit to AS5, and some small risk (no matter how slight), why continue to buy it? If you still have some by all means keep using it, but if you are going to buy something new you can get something just as good or better, cheaper, and with no possible risk of problems.

Arctic silver 5 isn't really conductive at all, as said in its description.
Also, if the stuff messed up components, mine wouldn't be working right now tongue.gif

Arctic Silver 5 is still capacitive and can still cause capacitive shorts if it gets where it should not. I've had AS5 short out some GPUs and VRMs with only a speck getting where it should not have been. Things were usually fine once it was cleaned off, however.

Also, many, many compounds that are normally not conductive, can eventually become conductive.

AS5, PK-1/2/3, all the TIM consultants compounds, and virtually anything else with metallic particles in the ingredients will be conductive if the binders it's suspended in are separated from the metal. This can happen during cleaning, if you aren't careful with solvents, and possibly even overtime as volatiles evaporate (though oxidation usually keeps up with this, and most oxides aren't conductive).

Anyway, neither conductivity nor capacitance should be very relevant when applying TIM to a part with an IHS as the odds of getting it on something that can be easily shorted are slim.

However, if you are applying TIM to bare dies with numerous reistors and capacitors around, or small ICs where getting TIM on contacts is inevitable, I highly recommend choosing a TIM where the fillers are purely ceramic. I generally use AS Ceramique for these applications, as it's one of the better performing purely ceramic TIMs, lasts forever, has a very thick consistency suited for these types of applications, and is dirt cheap.
