Good sub $65 surround headphones.

Thread Starter
I've been looking to upgrade my sony mdr xd-100's since the cable needs some twisting to work and I am considering perhaps a 5.1 or 7.1 headset. I've looked everywhere and half the people are saying that 5.1's are good, half are saying that it's a gimmick or the g35 is amazing or either it's bad quality. At the current state, what would provide the best surround experience for headphones at $65?

I am aware that I may need a sound card but my on-board audio says that it supports 7.1 + 2 speakers so I don't see the need to buy a sound card (I think it's called ALC898).

If it's some kind of sale please consider that I will be buying it from Canada. Thank you.

You only have two ears, so why would you need six speakers?
Gemini HSR-1000 (Takstar Pro 80) closed speakers, a little over your budget, but it's worth it.

Down the line get the Asus Xonar DG sound card ($25)

5.1/7.1 is a gimmick, if you want "Surround Sound"

Get:

A. Soundcard.(Xonar DG comes to mind for cheap)
B. Headphones with a good soundstage.

If you get those two things, you'll be good to go for "Surround Sound" for movies all the way to games.

And the G35 will not give you the kind of sound quality you can get for the same price in buying headphones.

Also, the G35 is stereo not 5.1/7.1

Talking from experience with my Turtle Beach HPA2's 5.1 is a gimmick. My AD-700's do a better job at telling me enemy positions than the HPA2's ever did. Then there are problems when games like CoD4 would sound extremely.... wierd sort of tinny I guess and music quality with them sucked....

If your looking for cheap but good headphones check out the Samson SR850's or Superlux 681's and the Superlux 668B.

The 668b and 681 are great choices, but as I always say.

681 if you want more fun sounding or immersive gaming and more fun music. or movies
668b if you want something for gaming competitively with the occasional song or movie.

I would also highly recommend buying new earpads for either of them, the stock ones are garbage.

You probably think that because of the difference in impedance between the two. If you have a proper headphone amp, the 668b are the clear winners. thumb.gif

The 668b IS superior audiophile wise but the 681 sounded more engaging and fun, maybe a bit better for more casual use. 668b has fuller mids, bigger soundstage, more detail. 681 has a better bass extension and treble extension, the mids are thinner but are more aggressive and in your face while on the 668b they sounded lifeless to me. It's down to personal preference I guess.

The 668b can sound very musical when paired with one of the Cmoy amps thumb.gif I haven't tried one myself but this is what everyone else says.
