max undervolt an athlon-fx?

Thread Starter
Hi, I am new to amd cpu's, I am planning to get an FX since its cheap these days and because it has multiplier and such. I want to undervolt it so I can use the computer for long time saving power, and uses its full power for games and such. If I am right, using RM clock + the multiplier of the FX, I should be able to get lowest 0.800V. This way I can save most power using this cpu. Please correct me if I am wrong.

You can use the C&Q feature that should help with your scheme...or simply run it STOCK at minimal voltage of say 1.4v...it'll last for a good while

its a desktop,

what is a C&Q feature

I haven't gotten the cpu yet, planning to, but if this is not possible I probably just have to go with core duo or pentium M desktop

If you are really concerned about electricity then you could go with the other line of more power efficient AMDs (forgot what they were called). Either way undervolting your CPU could possibly damage it by putting too much stress on the components and the power reduction is minimal. If you want to have to go on "lower power mode" then just enable "Cool N' Quiet". Cool N' Quiet automatically reduces the multiplier inorder to lower the clock speed of a cpu when it is not being used inorder to reduce the power usuage.

yea true but what if lowering the multiplier, for instance:

http://cpu.rightmark.org/products/rmclock.shtml

link shows it is possible, lowering the multiplier, still can run basic computer use like websurfing, word processing....
I probably would have to use prime95 to test for stability.

I would go for turion series for desktop, but if the FX is possible I wouldn't see the point buying turion.

All of the regular non-FX chips are multiplier unlocked down so you can use the lowest multi if you want. The only thing good about the FX chips is that it is fully multi unlocked. You won't need to use the higher multis if you're planning to underclock. You'll save money by not buying the overly $$$ FX chips.

FX chips are meant for overclocking. most chips will get a good overclock and be reliable and stable. a little bit of voltage won't hurt....

in other words, there's no big reason to undervolt your CPU and lower your clock speed..........that makes it slow

its not called underclock.net for a reason
