[MordorHQ] The True Story of Battlefield 3, its community and EA DICE

Introduction

I set out with the intention of clearing the air.

You see, the Battlefield community at large is splintered. There are the veterans that have played every game and there are newcomers that have started the Battlefield franchise with Battlefield 3. There are people that obsessively tracked BF3's development from the moment it was announced and there are those that first saw it sitting on a shelf in a retail store. There are inbetweeners that played one or two games previously and those that occasionally would stumble onto the official forums, Reddit, or a YouTube channel. There's even the publisher and developers themselves and with all these differing audiences there are many different sides to the story that is Battlefield 3.

There is an untold story that few know and that story is the whole story.

That last line may seem naive, foolhardy, or even arrogant but my goal here is to tell the full story. From all sides. It is a lofty goal and I am fully aware that there is almost no doubt that I will fall short but I think it's important someone tries. There is far too much infighting among people which, at the core, want the exact same things.

My hope is not to change anyone's opinion. My hope is to simply explain the other side of the coin. To make people aware, not only of the differing opinions, but the reasons for those opinions. So that we may better understand each other.

Probably one of the best pieces of work I've seen related to Battlefield 3 since it was first released. The article talks a lot about the relationship between DICE and it's community, with hundreds of sources to back it up.

Get ready, this is going to be a long read:

True story. The VoIP thing is my main concern because honestly I havent played BF3 very often since after the first expansion was released. I actually updated it tonight because I was thinking of playing it a little in the near future.

I know most people dont like to make comparisons between consoles and pc on these forums very often but when I first got into online gaming it was with Halo 2 on Xbox Live. I also played whatever battlefield games were available on the original xbox at the time. 1942 and a modified version of BF2 I believe and you always had voice chat. That was what made XBox Live such a big deal for me. I was able to sit down and talk to my friends that had xbox's and instead of going to each others house we would just fire up the games and talk all night long. It was a much better experience.

Now how many PC Games truly have an in game chat function? The only game that I play that has one is WoW and noone uses it. Everyone uses Vent, Mumble, or Teamspeak. I noticed the Crysis 3 Alpha had it and there may be another game here or there that has it as well but why can you not implement it into one of the most anticipated games on PC? I personally don't want to look all over the internet just to find a "clan" to play BF3 with so I can chat with them and play at the same time. I want to be able to enter a lobby, hear my teammates speak, and actively engage one another while we kill the enemy. Yes, Im able to type and kill people but when I play I want to hear my RANDOM team mates helping each other create tactics and I want to hear the enemy curse at us when we kill them.

Thanks for the link, it was a very interesting read.

I come from a BF2/2142 background, with 2142 actually being my favourite online FPS of all time, especially because of Titan matches. tongue.gif

Unfortunately due to career and educational commitments I've wound down from online multiplayer games and with this, did not invest in BF3 upon release (or to this date, for that matter.) I've also not being following it in the news, so nearly all of the information presented in that epically detailed 'blog' was new to me. I'm astounded by some of the things I've read, it's almost baffling me as to why the Devs would leave out core features especially when most of the coding foundation could have been ported over from BF2/2142...It almost makes me glad I didn't buy it to be honest, and also disheartened at the fact that since I stopped playing 2142 I've been waiting for an epic successor, which obviously isn't going to happen if they couldn't get BF3 right.

The foundation of 'Commander' had already been implemented in BF2, it would not be much effort to port it over to BF3 surely.

No VoIP is absolutely ridiculous, I'm not surprised there was a massive uproar about this. In fact I'm quite surprised that this is the first I've heard of it, even though I've been quite detached from BF developments and products.

I think DICE are forgetting that much of the hype surround BF3 was generated from BF2/2142 veterans and their excitement for a true sequel, this hype is what made the game relatively successful within the first week of sales alone. With the way they've treated the veteran community, it wouldn't surprise me if they were all but abandoned by them next time round and with it, the hype will dissipate.

In the first paragraph the guy says he will tell the story from both sides. Of course this being mordor he really just tells one side and calls the other side idiots. What a waste of 15 minutes to read all of that.

We get it mordor you don't like BF3... But don't label all battlefield veterans as disillusioned I was 21 when the first battlefield came out. I think BF3 is just fine I get that people are unhappy. Good go play arma 2.

We should have had VOIP we didn't get it most of us moved to TS or another VOIP privately, some things aren't quite right. But name me one perfect game and I'll call you subjective.

They really seem to hate the game over there; not that I'm a fan of DICE nowadays. One of the reasons I don't play the game much is because I know they won't really change the game at all so I just go find better games for me.

I put 14 hours into BF3. Couldn't stand it and went back to CSS and BFBC2. Just something about that game makes me not get into it....

I agree.

Are there problems?? Certainly. Is BF3 perfect? No. Would I love to see commanders, artillery, VOIP? You bet.

But this wasn't an even handed account of what occurred. It was a hit piece, using forums post as cites for veracity? This isn't even news.

BTW, ArmA and BF3 shouldn't even be mentioned together. I don't consider them to be in the same genre. I love them both, but they are as similar as apples and hand grenades.
