Help with Major Upgrades. Sandy vs Ivy?

Thread Starter
Hi guys, I am soon going to be upgrading my system, which will include the processor, ram, mobo.

I am going to use my old case, hdds, optical drives, and maybe psu. I just order a HD 7950 and it should be here soon.

I am going to be gaming on it mostly, and some regular stuff like school work. No editing or anything like that.

I have some question also.

1. Should I change my PSU? (There's nothing wrong with it, but been using it a while)

2. I was thinking about getting a 3770k, but I want to make sure that it will last me around 3 years so I won't have to upgrade again.

3. What kinda motherboard should I get?

My budget is around $500 for the upgrade.

3570k (all you need for gaming, go with 2500k if you can get it for a great price) - $214.99
ASRock Z77 Extreme4 (nice motherboard with plenty of features - good overclocker too) - $129.99
8GB Samsung "Wonder" Ram (overclocks to at least 1866) - $34.99
CM Hyper 212 EVO (can overclock to at least 4.5 GHz) - $34.99

Total: $415

Will I be able to use my cooler? I'm not sure if the bracket is the same.

The CM Hyper 212 is a new cooler, and can help you clock to at least 4.5GHz. It's $35. Time to move on to a new cooler.

you will be fine with the stock cooler if your not goin to overclock...

.but in this case that you have an unlock CPU,...i know you will attempt to OC your CPU but before that you must have a very decent cooler to maintain your good temps and not goin to fry your mobo....

If you're building new go with the 3570k. The Ivy can run hot anyways because of how it's made, so the stock cooler even with turbo on may not keep things cool enough, so the CM Hyper 212 EVO is a relatively inexpensive aftermarket cooler that does an amazing job for air cooling.

With regards to your PSU, you know how old it is an if you can trust it in a new build. Go into your BIOS and check your +3.3v, +5v, +12v are all still in range, it should be fine. With regards to your 3 year plan, a rig built today can last anywhere from 1-5 years. Technology changes so quickly that within a year or two a new generation exists. Bare in mind that this is the third gen Core i5 you're looking at. I opted not to wait for Ivy and have been using a second gen Core i7 for a year now and the only upgrades were adding some ram and a 7950.

I'd highly suggest going with a LGA 2011 system or waiting until Haswell drops in the second quarter of 2013...
